car recalled ..... crankshaft guide bearings

Just got this notification through today. Has anyone had it? What's it all about? Car needs to go in for two days. Still waiting from new door rubbers as well! Argh.

I've not heard of those components before, crankshaft thrust bearings, crankshaft main bearings...but not guide bearings.
Interesting.

My MCS 5dr went in yesterday because of a rattle around the dash and was told I was due for a Quality Enhancement check, on questioning they said they needed to take some crankshaft measurements, and the car would be ready today, they've just phoned to say the tolerances on the crankshaft are excessive and it has gradually been eating away at the components in the engine. There only option is a complete new engine which has been ordered today, I'm not particular happy as the car is only 10 months old.....

At last they are taking proactive measures, rather than just waiting for failures to be reported.

It has taken a while for them to realise there is a problem.

9,000 miles, November 2014 build, its not been driven hard as the wife has used it for taking the kids to school and back. The reason I'm so annoyed is that we had another car a few years back that had a new engine, and it was never the same again, I also bought this as a keeper and as such the car has every factory option listing at over 30k new, otherwise I would have swapped it in for a new one and not worried so much.

Mine had around 8,000 miles and needed a new engine and clutch due to excessive crankshaft end float.
Have done around 1800 miles now on the new engine and going fine, a bit of a pain having to treat the engine gently again but now starting to use the full revs again.
At least they are checking for this now.
I shouldn't worry, the dealer did a good job on mine and the customer service was superb.

Did you get any information about the difference between the old and new engines that will prevent the problem recurring?

About time! Some action to prevent engines needing replaced.

Is this just an S issues or all petrol f56 MINIs?

Sorry to learn of this Donna , but if this is linked to the problem with engine replacements some have been offered great deals to swap upto new JCW been a few I have seen done this, but you will need all the info first, if Raymond the BMW service manager is still there he is very honest and good when we had extensive problems with our new MCS in 2007.
Good look hope they get it sorted but I would want free extended warranty a minimum and written assurance that no damage been done with any movement on the shaft as tolerances in the area of engine are very small
