Bssp resigns as miniusa begins search for a new ad agency

Well maybe this will help Mini Sales in the future.

Big news in the advertising world today as BSSP has formally resigned the MINIUSA account after 11 years. Via Adage:

“This has been a difficult decision for the agency. Over the years, we have created great work with the talented team at Mini,” said John Butler, chief creative officer at BSSP, in a statement. “It’s unusual to have such an extended relationship with a client. We appreciate that opportunity.”

BSSP famously followed in the big foot steps of Crispin Porter + Bogusky who helped create the brand in the US. But BSSP had plenty of ideas of their own and helped the brand expand from one car and two models to the entire range of cars with over 100 dealers to support.

More from Adage: Mariella Kapsaskis, Mini communications manager for BMW North America, said in a statement that Mini USA is initiating a creative agency review. She also stated that BSSP decided not to participate in the review and has resigned the business. “We respect their decision and appreciate their great work and partnership over the past 11 years,” she said.

Clearly this was a hard decision given the length of the relationship and the strength of some of the work. However it does allow MINI USA a chance to bring in a fresh perspective. MINIUSA’s marketing has seen critique on this site and elsewhere over the past few years and there’s room for new ideas and approaches.

It is not "Old School" if you can not put a Weber on it.

The Crispin Porter + Bogusky work on the debut and launch of the new MINI was the best marketing they had. BSSP never quite matched it.

Understeer - is when you hit the wall with the front wing; oversteer - is when you hit the wall with the back wing; horsepower - is how fast you hit the wall; torque - is how far you move the wall when you hit it.

Hmm, I wonder if this has something to do with all the inventory on the lots? They, BMW, may be right about this, or perhaps it may have more to do with making the mini something it is not what it has been, a pint-sized power pack of fun that appealed to their traditional base. We miniphiles were attracted to a very small, quirky, beastie that alternated between the best fun sized automobile ever conceived and cursing it for its mechanical issues! There is no question or doubt that it is a better mechanical beast, but is it losing its pint sized package and becoming just another car competing with more traditional brands for the same market? I love the F56 for its power and handling, but it is pushing the boundary for me personally with its size although I do appreciate the interior room for extended drives to club driving events. Maybe BMW is as conflicted as I am and I should save my pennies and order one of the custom rebuilds of the classic mini with SUPER POWER!

I think you only can "push Retro" for so long and than Automakers are in a Pickle. It is difficult to keep the Base happy the Dealers and create new business and than there are new Safety Rules year after year and lets not forget that people gain weight year after year so no wonder cars are getting bigger. Have you looked at the new Porsche Targa it is the size of a 7 ton delivery van now.

Looks more like a Carrera! Not that it is a bad thing to look like a Carrera, and give Deutschland their due, they do build some very fine automobiles.

I guess we better wring them out, or maybe thrash them out having fun while we can! Sort of like the old mariners and the dodo birds, eat them while you can!

MINI is still one of the most recognizable cars on the road today, thank goodness! Only a MINI looks like a MINI! Ads should focus on the individuality of this great little car! When a MINI JCW can beat Porsche at Daytona any ad agency worth their salt "should" be all over that!!

Yes it's bigger these days, but safety regulations are a huge reason for this...otherwise our front behemoth of a bumper would be much smaller!

MINI, and BMW, are smart to change ad agencies imo....long overdue, and enough with the pc ads like during the Super Bowl a couple years ago...awful!

Show the unaware folks out there what MINI has got!!!!! The new Alfa Romeo ad is well done...MINI needs to take note!;-)
