12v Boot Question

In the rear of my 2016 F56 I have a spot to put in an aux 12v socket. It is a spot intended for the Storage Package plug, but is just a cover for the cars with out the storage package. I have the socket I need but no directions for wiring. Can anyone tell me if it would be OK to wire the plug to the light, which is right next to that location, in the rear on the right hand passages side of the trunk area??? Or better, what or where I SHOULD tap into. I successfully opened everything up and found NO open / available plug / wires to tap into, just tons of wires tapped together in bundles? I know I need a Hot and a Ground, but which ones?? I do not want to splice into just anything, and make a huge mess. I am sure that SOMEONE else, much smarter than me already has accomplished this??

Hi, I expect that tapping into a light feed will at best blow a fuse, and may upset the operation of the lights. Sorry I don't have a positive answer, and you're doing the right thing asking - don't guess this one, it won't end well!

As far as I know they stopped fitting a 12v socket in the rear over a year ago on all Gen3's regardless of what package you have, mines a Now 2015 and not got one!

I certainly won't tap into a lighting circuit, you'd be getting all sorts of issues I'd say!

There was a thread on here recently about this so a search could answer you question :)

I really wouldnt recommend tapping in to any existing circuit as it could throw up errors. If you have to a direct feed routed from the positive terminal of the battery is probably the best way but im no expert.

If they did that might be market specific. My 2015 has the storage package with the 12V boot socket. The boot socket still shows up in the storage pack on US spec cars.

backing up what Jeremy said, safest option is to run a supply from the battery to your socket.
but just to point out that you must fuse it, just as it leaves the battery, with a fuse that is no more
than what you need and what the cable can take, if it were shorted out.

why, well taking into consideration worst case scenario, you have an accident, or the cable catches and
gets cut through to ground, or the equipment you plug in shorts out, you need that fuse to blow just
an inch or two away from the battery, otherwise if that cable shorts out on route to its destination, it
would instantly become a small bar fire, with obvious consequences.

regards peter

Sorry I was referring to GB registered/spec'd MINI's. When I was looking around and deciding if to buy one the demo's I tried had the socket, secret glovebox & side sun blind but gone time mine was built!

There is one in our clubby in the boot and one for rear seat passengers too. Awash with them! We will definitely use it for our powered coolbox!

Beside the boot light same sort of cover as the front one

Although I'm not sure I'm ever going to use it
Oh now you tell us! Just spent 10 minutes outside in the minging weather looking for it! Mine's there, up by the light. It came with the storage pack which is included in Chili on a JCW. Maybe still is, my car's brand new.

Well I've owned the car for 1 year and 6 previous MINI's every one had the socket as you look in the boot on the lefthand side.

Like MINIkiter I've just gone out in the grotty weather to reassure myself that I don't have one and sure enough nothing on the left where every other one has been!

Now to confirm I do read all the posts and various comments about it being by the light I have found one on the right by the light sort of under the parcelshelf ledge!

So yippee I have one, I wonder if it works? :D

It'll work sorry i didn't realise you weren't looking on the right hand side. Lots of things have moved sides on the f series, petrol cap cruise stereo controls spring to mind!
