Hello,
So this guy has the same rattle that I am having, he has a 2019 model and I have a 2018 LCI (made 03/18).
The engine rattle is hearable at idle when the engine is warmed up.
My car has 48000 km. Stock, planning a remap after hopefully fixing this.

I do frequent oil changes - maximum 10.000 km
But I am aware that the first engine oil change was done in 30.000km. That’s what the previous owner did.
Before I bought it, the car was making short distance trips around big city, a lot of traffic and stop/go. Previous owner was a BMW Manager. But I don’t think the car had an oil change when I bought it at 12.000km, so I did the change in 30.000km.
My car is older and probably has more kilometers than the mini in the video.

I think the owner made a thread here, he said it was 3 weeks, 3 months old? Never updated the thread.
Car is under warranty.
Any ideas what could it be? Nearest dealer is 3 hours away.
I also think my rattle is louder, you can hear it 5 meters away.

Sounds normal to me-visit a dealer and compare yours with theirs-the injectors do make that sound apparently.

Does not sound normal to me given the irregular sound pattern, but this does not sound like anything serious with the engine block either.

You said that the noise is heard only when the engine is warm. Does the noise change when you switch off climate control OR put it to max performance?

I'm not taking it to the dealer yet, they will tell me they all sound the same and nothing is wrong unless it makes problems.
I know when they're new, they dont make this sound.
When I bought it at 11.000 km, it was not doing this tapping sound either.
I know the injectors are noisy, and are probably more loud on the video, therefore overwriting the problematic sound, it is more hearable in person.
I might have it a bit more loud, than this person on the video.

It is irregular, I think it is coming from a serpentine belt, maybe idler pulley?
I can't hear the noise when revving or increased RPMs, when the A/C is running, it increases RPMs, which is normal and the sound is gone. It is there just when the car is warm, sitting still and at idle RPMs which are steady.

Maybe something with the serpentine belt, or the tensioner or the idler pulley. I'm still awaiting a reply from my specialist.

It's ok, it is not making any issues, but the sound, it is just suspicious!

Yeah, something like that was my guess, maybe the A\C or generator drive or something. Or even maybe something coming loose and resonating.
If there's something bad with the engine, usually you will first hear some suspicious sound on a cold start. Not when it has warmed up. And normally some of the car systems will be off until your engine is warm (like the cabin heater). That's why i was asking if the noise changes when you switch equipment on\off. Also,
1) irregular sound pattern most likely indicates that it has nothing to do with cylinder-piston group, otherwise the pattern would've been more regular and straightforward.
2) sounds indicating problems with cylinder-piston group usually match your RPM with a 1:1 \ 1:2 \ 1:4 ratio. This sound on your videos doesn't.

Hey, did you ever get to the bottom of what was causing this noise? I have the exact same noise and my car came with 6miles and had done 25miles from brand new factory order then started making this horrible embarrassing noise haha. I have no idea what it is but its very annoying i know that. Thanks

No I haven’t solved it yet. It is an embarrassing and bad sounding sound indeed. Some guy in the comments said it might be oil/vacuum pump, there is a chain inside it that might be causing this sound. Slacking or I don’t know. Until the car runs fine, I’m not changing it. But as I can see from your car, it is a problem that comes from factory. So if people start noticing this, go to dealerships and properly describe the possible cause and sound, dealers will notice it and then bmw/mini might do something haha.

Can you hear it when you’re sat in the car its like a cat purring kind if sound its very strange and i took mine back to mini and they told me to just run the engine in to 2000miles 😂 i said to him “if it makes it to 2000miles haha” yeah I seen also seen it could be something called the VANOS? :/ lol but this shouldnt be happening on our cars mate they aint cheap and like mine was literally collected on sat 19th dec with 6miles and 20th it was on a flatbed going back to BMW 😂 yes definitely a problem from factory also mine does exactly what yours does when its warm it does it its on idle you can rev it low revs and still hear it slightly but it doesnt speed up with the RPM. When i read your post i was like Omg! Im not alone 😂 yeah after the new year i will definitely be going back to them. Apparently the technician took it home warmed it up 14miles driven and couldnt hear it? 🤔 hes a bad technician 😂 thanks for your reply when mine gets sorted i will let you know or if you do 1st please also let me know 😊

Yes thank you! I’m currently focusing more on my r59 roadster and f56 is just a daily, so I might not get into it, but it still on my mind as the sound is very loud even when having JCW pro exhaust haha 😆 you can hear it 15 meters away

Seriously!! WOW yours must be stupidly loud then a BMW technician definitely cant say he cant hear yours haha, i think you should take it back while its still under warranty then it gives them time to rectify it and keep pushing to have it repaired as you are paying good money for the car to be 100%. How long has yours been making this horrible noise for now? 15 meters away with a pro exhaust and can still hear it is crazy it must sound like i diesel 😂😂

It has been making the noise for 40.000 km 😃 they can’t hear anything in bmw, I’m out of warranty now. The car now has 75.000km. It’s fine, I’m now going to an independent bmw specialist so we might listen and seek

Hi! At home we have a F56 one and a BMW F40 118i. Both are using the B38 engine (1 cilinder missing ) and in my F40 I think I have the same rattle of the second video. My car has the automatic gearbox (getrag DCT) and the rattle seems to go away when the car is put in Park.
I link a video below of the sound it makes. The irregular "rhythm" of the rattle appears to be identical and it only happes when the car is warm.
What do you think?

Interesting, thanks for your post, it might be related to the DCT gearbox, my car is also rattling under acceleration and the noise disappears above 2.000 rpm, might be wastegate rattle.

On mine the noise goes away as soon as I slightly press the accelerator pedal or release the brake/clutch (when it is on “D”).
Can you try and see if yours is having the same behavior when selecting Park and than Neutral ? I’m worried that is the DMF making that noise.
Btw my car has less than 3000km

Definitely a noise that occurs from the factory now, you are right, no irregular noise when in D and stationary. As soon as I go, rattle until 2000 rpm, wastegate or most likely the Dual Mass Flywheel... didn’t think of that, good find
