I started getting a battery discharge warning in the mornings, thinking its the battery getting old (5 years now) I put it down to that. But then I noticed when I was hanging around the car when it was locked that the internal fans turn on by themselves, they would turn off briefly when I would press the lock or unlock button on the remote controll, but then they would start working again after a few minutes.

I have been having issues with the heater not working in the last 6 months and now its spring the cooling isn't working either, so something is up with the a/c unit. But I find it so strange that it turns the fans on by itself when the car is supposed to be off.

I am taking it to the mechanics (not BWM/MINI) to see what they say.

In the mean time I found a solution to stop it from turning on, by setting the Auto / Manual air circulation switch to Manual mode before turning off the air and then the car.

There is actually a function to turn on the fans at a predetermined time. This is to help cool the car on a hot day when you know when you'll be returning to it. I used it in the summer and it's surprisingly effective.

Is it possible your timer is set? If not, it might be as you suspect and the A/C computer is a bit confused (broked.)

"and now it's spring... " yeah yeah show off! :p

Yah thanks, I never used that option and didn't know it even has it. Plus the day wasn't so hot.

The mechanic said that the actual air/con system seems to be doing its job, but he thinks its the controller... and that part is $3k Australian (prob 2KUSD). As much as I love the car, I don't know that I want to roll the dice on what next might need fixing. At the moment I can at least still use the car, but god forbid something goes wrong with the gearbox or the engine, I cant imagine how much that will cost to fix.

BMW/MINi wanted to charge $265 AU per hour to diagnose the issue. I'm taking it to an aircon specialist who will diagnose for free. I really hope the fix isn't too much.

I was reading a bit about why the fans turn themselves on, and it could be a function of the aircon to remove the condensation from the system while the car is off.
