Hi all,

I've been following this forum for about 7 months now, and 5 months ago I bought my first MINI. A white silver Cooper with the 1.5L 3 banger. This is my first car, and the car is a total hoot. Amazing to drive-- I love it. I should also mention that I purchased the car from Mini Oakville in Canada, and they were a dream to work with in both their sales and service departments.

Unfortunately about two months ago I started to smell a horrible mould smell coming from the air conditioner for about 2 minutes after start-up, and then it would stop for the rest of my drive. Last month, I couldn't take it anymore as the car smelled of mould even when the A/C was off. I continuously vacuumed and cleaned the car weekly hoping that the smell may cease, but it didn't. Last week I notice some white stuff all around my MINI rubber floor mats that came with the car, so I lifted them. Both the driver's side and passenger's side floors were soaked, and there was mould growing in both footwells. Dried it up, cleaned with vinegar, then carpet cleaner. The smell didn't go away the next day so I immediately booked a service appointment.

I brought it in two days ago and received the car back this morning. Turns out that they had a recall on the pollen filter which clogged up with mould/gunk. This is what caused the water to leak all over both footwells. They ended up having the carpets professionally cleaned, replaced the pollen filter, and they also disinfected/cleaned the whole HVAC system with a foam cleanser.

I knew that many of you have had this issue, so I thought I would update. So far no issues, and car smells squeaky clean. Very happy with their work.

I'll leave you with some photos of the car.

Cheers

Something similar happened to me on Thursday, two month old F55 S.

Drove 200 miles from home to Stoke 0n Trent, when we got out at the hotel my wife said her handbag strap was wet.

Looked on the passenger foot well and the carpet and mat were saturated, driver side was just a bit damp. I put it down to a blocked AC condensate drain pipe, rang the dealer and the lady on service said another customer had rung in that day with the same problem.

Crazy week coming up so the earliest I can get it in is 27th, I'll update then.

Mines goes in Tuesday for this. I get the vinegar smell out of the vents but luckily the carpet has never been wet.

I hope everything goes well, and that you both drive some cool service vehicles. I drove a 2016 Countryman S. Fun to drive, but the interior is nowhere near the quality of the F56. I guess it will be brought up to par next year when the next generation is released.

It is this as mentioned, "PuMa is a worldwide BMW database of all reported problems and most with the their appropriate fixes. "

In addition, the acronym breakdown of PuMA translates into this.....

PuMA =

"Problem and Measures management Aftersales

or in German:

Problem und Mebnahmenmanagement Aftersales."

There is a thread on here bad stinky odour, which shows what the dealer has to do to raise the filter off the base of the housing. If they didnt do this you will be back to square one.

Took the car in this morning, guy on service said it was the third with the same problem in as many weeks.

Got a Cooper convertible auto as a loaner, guess what is chucked it down with rain all day here. I've got it for two days as they need to fix the fault and then dry the carpets and dehumidify them which takes more than a day.

Never driven the three pot before, great little engine and sounds sporty especially through the fabric roof.

I'll update with more details tomorrow when I get it back.

Mine went back in this morning. I've received a call from my SA who says A/C drain was plugged and kinked-- the reason for the wet floors and stinky A/C in the first place. I won't have the car for the rest of the week, and am now driving a Paceman.

Got mine back this afternoon.

Problem traced to the condensate drain pipe being deformed and leaking at the point where it clips in to the bottom of the heater / AC box. New pipe and a dehumidify later at it looks OK after a 20 mile drive back from the dealer.

I have a different car brand, but the problem with the air conditioner is the same. I think I can't do without the help of a specialist. However, thank you for the document with information that you attached to the post. I have read it and I think it will be useful for me in the future. And now I can't do without the help of the air conditioner repair servicing (socool.sg), because all the ways I used to fix my air conditioner don't work.

Had the same issues with my Mini when the air con started to start blowing really foul smelling air. I thought it was because I packed lunch to work everyday but I heard from my friend that it wasn't. He recommended me some air con servicing articles that taught me how to remove the odour and I followed in. It was on subcool.sg if it helps. My air con is now clean and fresh!

There could be dead pests like rodents or insects in your air vent? I had the same issue of foul smelling air con for a long time but I got rid of it by getting some pesticides. There are some air con servicing articles that informed me that there could be some dead animal or insects in the vent that are rotting causing the smell. It turned out to be true and I found a dead rat in it. Had to do a thorough cleaning of my air con vents in the end as I did not want bacteria and germs to be spreading around in my car so in the end I brought it to an air con service company.
