Anyone tried removing the side plastics of the head unit screen which covers parts of it? (F56)

Hi guys,

I was just wondering if anyone tried removing the side plastics of the head unit screen in F56.
it is clearly covers part of the LCD screen so why not removing it.
Now that I have installed a CARPLAY box it is defiantly needed.

Of course not sure it is possible . it seems like a one plastic piece.
Maybe there`s an alternate frame which can fit and not having these plastics?

My option is on these questions:
There is always one person to be the first to found out if it is possible and how it’s done.
When I’m doing automotive things, I’m that guy, doing the things nobody’s dares or everybody talks about but never done it by themselves…
Yeah I can see what you mean. Absolutely groundbreaking stuff
I don't believe there's a larger, full-width screen underneath to expose, otherwise this would have been identified as a solution for upgrades a long time ago. My guess is that this screen is indeed squared off under the plastic, but it is still a small screen. There would be unsightly empty space on each side if you pulled the front trim off. See my attached image for what this might look like.

You could upgrade to the larger screen, iDrive controllers, and new coding, which would solve your screen issue and also give you factory CarPlay and Navigation. It's not cheap, regardless of whether you use new or used parts.

I've never seen a forum discussion about someone with your head unit only upgrading to a larger screen. I don't think the smaller-screen image dimensions can be resized for the larger screen.

Actually this question came up 5 seconds after installing the CARPLAY box and saw this annoying little gap to show all screen details.
You can see in this image below that just a little bit is necessary here :)
Not asking much. Just to see the Time 🤣😎😋

In carplay, go to “home” app which have settings for carplay, I don’t remember where exactly but you have an option to change the screen size. It’s called right scrap and left scrap. Play with it.
If you don’t find it I’ll check where it is exactly in mine.

Thanks ! I saw this setting before I ordered my Carplay box but it seems that it doesn`t appear anywhere so it might exist only in specific box models.
The seller even gave me the Expert password to change resolution because my icons were stretched at the beginning and it helped.
So I`m left with this one...If you find it - please let me know. My box is a Limcet.

I will let you know
You can also check here if the system you own is one of those (usually all are the same) and if so maybe update the software version if a newer one is available.
