hey peeps,

I have a 2016 F56s with HK and visual boost,

im pretty much over the moon with must of the sound system, have all my music as MP3 on a usb stick, and for the most part its half decent,

but I have two sets of war of the worlds on it one is mp3 and the other is FLAC

and thought the flac version would blow me away, but they sound the same!

also nothing yet sounds as good as the sound I get from my DAB

what is the best versions of music file to play and does it have to come from something other than a usb stick

thanks for any help

I'm happy with a Fijo with high quality DAC connected via wire and 192KHz flac.
The HK is not bad...the sound is a bit "boxed" , the very high freq. are not linear and the f<80 Hz are not present...but the sound is punchy...and strong enough.
But a CD player was better.....

MP3 is so compressed that I can hear a difference compared to AIFF or other audio formats. The only advantage I think for MP3 is you can put a lot of files on a USB drive, low quality but high quantity.

Another thing is MINIs are not the best environmental choice for sound quality. Lots of intrusive mechanical and road noise but doesn't spoil driving fun!

Going out on a limb, my guess is DAB reception sounds good because there's less compression used, similar to FM broadcast. FLAC is compressed too but should sound better than MP3. You can compare file sizes to get an idea how much the audio has been compressed in different formats. I've used AIFF on USB drives but haven't tried it on our F55 yet.

My mini must be padded with all the stuff I specced as honeslty I have close to minimal road noise if you discount the exhaust notes >:D,

my R56 was bad,

what is AIFF ? sorry for my ignorance

I checked the file sizes between the mp3 and flac as I loaded it all onto a new micro USB so know they were noticeably bigger, I will endeavour to investigate and play, without looking in my handbook, I take it theres a list of compatible files the mini plays back, but does it have them in order of quality ?

I have driven highly insulated cars and the sound system sounds awesome but the F56 to me is a bit noisy to appreciate the HK system. But compared to my ute and that basic sound system, the mini is much better again.

Another approach is to wear a motorcycle helmet with speakers built in and your laughing. If you can buy a plain white helmet with a blue visor, you will probably get appreciative looks.

ha ha like it, a few years back and thats something my younger brother would have recommended trying :D

I have a Kef home cinema and appreciate im not gonna get anything like it

to be fair, the sound itself is really good, the vocals are crystal clear, just thought there would be a significant difference between certain palyback material

i suppose the other thing i need to consider i have only just covered 1100 miles from new, and apart from one 400 mile journey the speakers etc havent had a chance to settle in yet

p.s also im suporised giving i have the HK the volume has to be over 3/4 full on to get to loudish playback!

You need to give the speakers time to bed in, I wasnt too overwhelmed when I first listened to the HK stuff, but now ive got a few k miles on the car and been using the audio quite a bit the sound is def much better than it was to begin with.
thanks

have a 9-10 hour round trip to wales coming up, so hopefully that will losing the blighters

AIFF is audio interchange file format - in other words most likely the original format the music was recorded in on a commercial CD. I think studios use it too but I'm only a pretend audio geek :D
