Hi all,
Just wanted to start another discussion on brake upgrades (I know there are already a couple on here but need some more info).

I want to upgrade the brakes (street/semi-performance pads and drilled/slotted rotors top priority, new system with bigger callipers if budget allows) on my Cooper S but, here in Australia, the JCW kit is exorbitant to say the least... I‘ve been searching and reading for weeks and only a couple aftermarket options have shown themselves to me, including some pads and rotors from DBA.

Does anyone have any advice? I’d ideally like to get new callipers as well and go to a bigger sized rotor, but let me hear all your options! For reference, I’ve got G.max rims with more clearance than the JCW rims so wont have a problem fitting large brake components... Eager to hear what people have found in the market as its like searching for a needle in a haystack!

Cheers.

You can find a good JCW Caliper Auction about 600€ on eBay. Dunno about the delivery costs to Australia.
You have a Cooper S so better to take only front calipers and discs (you have to change wheels too). Rear caliper are the same for S only red painted.

I know Rotora US make a kit for Mini too but don't know anyone with this kit, maybe from US to AUS should be a bit more cheap

I’m in the same position as you, also have an MCS also from Australia also researching what I can do to upgrade the brakes and have also found it hard to find aftermarket parts here.

My research has directed me to Sparesbox, they stock DBA (I’m looking at the T2 Slotted) Zimmerman and Brembo.

I’m not ready to swap out my rotors as yet but am keen to find out you end up doing.

I took a set of original Brembo JCW front Caliper (400€) then Check-up with rubber seal repair kit (100€) and 2 Zimmerman 335x30mm ZCoat baffled disk (120€)
Now I have to look for the right wheel measure (maybe Autec or Sparco Pro), yet to decide whether 17" or 18"

Other option founded: an user on Italian Mini Group uses a 6pot Maserati Granturismo Caliper with 365mm disk ;)
I leave two pics as examples
Wheel is Etabeta Piuma C18" 8ET40

Thanks all for your input. Purely for cost and reliability I’m going to go with the X1/225i brake swap well documented in a couple posts already on this forum. I’ve already got rims that would fit the JCW Brembos but can’t find any parts used and you don’t even want to know the cheapest genuine parts quote I’ve got from the dealer (including a trade discount for buying through the name of my used dealership). Hint: it’s exorbitant and 3x the cost of getting used callipers from a wrecker and brand new pads+discs from DBA (a reputable Australian brake part manufacturer). I’ll be installing the parts myself when they arrive so the ordeal will cost me less than $800 AUD. If anyone wants to ask some questions on brake upgrades let me know, I’ve been doing a lot of reading and cross referencing the past week:LOL:

Hi Nick which state are you in? I'm in VIC. I've put together the following shopping list for my JCW's suspension/brakes over the next few months, most parts are available in Aus;

Eibach lowering springs 15mm-20mm E10-57-004-05-22 Pro Kit
Mintex Fast Road brake pads front + rear
EBC Turbo groove brake discs
HEL stainless steel braided brake lines
Brake fluid flush with AP racing DOT 5.1
5mm hubcentric spacers front + rear
Powerflex complete bush kit

Hi Alex,
I’m in SA. Impressive list! I don’t quite have the cash to burn to get all that but long term I’m looking at a similar setup for suspension. I’m sticking to just brakes for now. Will be doing the Adelaide Rally in the car in a month so brakes are the most pressing thing rn as my first rally with the car was borderline scary with how poorly the car stopped and quickly the brakes faded...

Hi Nick, where are you sourcing the X1 brakes from?

@nick.hass , did you have any problems with the X1 F48's callipers rubbing against the wheel? I've got the 18" Two-Tone Vanity Spoke wheels, but I found that the X1 F48 callipers are too big and touch the wheel. Though the standard F56 callipers fit the X1 F48 caliper carriers, they (F56 callipers) aren't big enough and don't fit when the X1 F48 pads are put on.

I have after market wheels which are slightly wider with a decreased offset, so knew I wouldn't have trouble fitting the X1 callipers. I remember reading somewhere (sorry I can't remember where) that people with OEM 18" Mini wheels were trying to do this mod and assumed that an 18" diameter would mean they have enough room, but some of the 18" OEM's simply didn't due to spoke design despite having the same width, offset and diameter as the others. So, I'm guessing your callipers are just rubbing on your spokes?

I wouldn't recommend swapping calliper carriers between the two sets even if the pads did fit! You may have to go down the route of new wheels, very small spacers or modifying the calliper to fit.
