I hope this is no too obsessive :) but is there any special treatment I should give the plastic trims/fenders on my Cooper - Should I just wash along with the car or; should I apply the same conditioner treatment I give the interior plastic/vinyl.

The intent is o keep it looking nice (prevent aging look)

THX! 0:)

This i think is a real problem; especially if someone (oil delivery man) scratches the plastic and you t cut it out-leaving white/fady stains that get worse if you spill petrol when filling the tank-ME!

Anyway my findings so far for what they are worth; Autoglym bumper gel; cheap, nice intial finishe ie glossy but a bit sticky, and rain quickly ccreates run marks in it-not brilliant.

Armorall interior plastic finish as above

A glaze detailer; pretty decent, came with the pack so not sure if you can get it generally, or the price

BMW 's own bumper/plastic care-works well-lasts longer than autoglym teeny bit more pricey but better imo, and a good compromise.

poor boys bumper and trim restorer; gives a really nice finish-as BMW really -does streak with rain eventually but didnt manage to cover the marks left by the petrol-BMW 's does this reasonably well

PEANUT BUTTER-yes seriously-dirt cheap=tried it once and it seems to work really well BUT only had crunchy and gettign the bits out was a mare; watch this space for a review on how it works properly when i can get some!

yet to try; black wow-expensive but developed by a mini enthusiast apparently and
the stuff that Donna recommends; GTECHNIQ permanent trim restoer-expensive though but comes highly recommended as Donna is a perfectionist!

Mothers 06112 Back-to-Black Plastic and Trim Restorer works well, but by far the best I've seen is Penetrol. This was recommended to me by a long time member on the M/A forum and should last closer to a year before requiring re-application. It had been on my '07 MCS for about six months when I traded it, and it still looked good. Simple, but a little time consuming.

Applying Penetrol….

One can will last years and you will be able to do 10 or 20 cars easy. You don't have to mix it with anything just apply it right from the can with a sponge that you will not use again. Trash the sponge when you are done because when it dries it will be hard as a rock and will not wash out. (Oil Based)

For prepping your trim just clean your trim with lacquer thinner or acetone to remove any old silicone based dressings. Next wipe on a nice coat of Penetrol but don't let it run. You will see what I am talking about when you apply it.

Let it dry overnight and add another layer the next day. Your trim will look better than brand new for a year and it will resist dust and stuff and it will not wash or wear off.

* If you get sloppy when applying it and get a little on your paint wipe it off ASAP before it dries or you will have to use lacquer thinner or acetone to remove it from your paint. It's not real big deal but you will need to re-wax that painted area since the lacquer thinner or acetone will strip off the wax.

If you ever need to remove it use lacquer thinner or acetone and wipe slowly and it will come off.

I have also taped up my bumper and sprayed it on all 3 of my front grills with an old Windex bottle and wiped a layer on my wiper arms. This stuff is awesome.

I'm thinking i might invest too Donna; getting fed up of treating mine every few weeks and the rain marks too. just could do with waiting till xmas is over and funds to improve! J

Chemical guys new look Trim Gel.
A little goes a long way so the bottle lasts ages.
Wipe on with a cloth, do all the trim then go back over again with a clean clutch to remover the excess.
Seems to last a good while, my favourite at the moment;)

I bought some Autoglym Bumper and Trim gel but wasn't overly impressed (apart from the smell which was nice!), seemed incredibly runny. Last week I bought some Meguiars Black Plastic Restorer and am impressed so far. Was much thicker and could tell the difference right away. Seems to have lasted so far too

Would anyone know how the plastic bumpers react to detailing products like Iron X and Tar Remover? Gonna do a full decontamination on my new JCW. Do these products mark the trim at all?

Cheers.

I wouldn't use tar remover on them however I would let iron x run on them only because iron x is ph balanced

Cheers. I'm happy with that as any tar remover will be added carefully and localised, rather than the general spray of the Iron X all over the car!

Update; gtechniq plastic trim; two weeks in not a sign of any weathering; best yet by a country mile and on a very faded piece of f56 wheel arch! lots of rain and two washes so far and it is still beading beautifully and no sign of any streaking!
