There seem to be some strange posts on the oil checking process and I feel sure some confuse oil level and coolant temp. This is a how to on the xl equipped car and apologies for all of you who have it sorted.,so I thought I'd try to help clarify.

If you press the bc button until the following picture appears YOU ARE CHECKING COOLANT TEMPERATURE NOT OIL LEVEL https://www.dropbox.com/s/uu7utnevsw2ifq4/2015-09-13 14.19.36.jpg?dl=0

To check oil ensure engine is hot(mine isn't) press menu on the I drive controller ,vehicle status, then the oil can picture and select check oil level. THEN LEAVE THE CAR TO DO ITS THIING. On the media xl screen you get a vertical readout of the level. It takes a few mins an you need auto stop off and not touch anything.

Please note this is on the xl equipped car! https://www.dropbox.com/s/4t4wikjvsp7ydre/2015-09-13 14.20.42.jpg?dl=0

Hope this helps.

Just to add, the manual says that if you drive the car for half an hour it automatically checks the engine oil level, a bit like the tyre pressures. It doesn't give an exact reading when doing this like when pressing the the 'check oil level', but will return oil level OK or similar in the menu. It says that if you do lots of short trips (<30 mins) then you should use the check oil level feature to get a reading.
