Hi, sorry for newbie question.

Daytime running lights-are they the horseshoe shaped ring above the headlights on the new Mini?

On some forums, there seems to be a belief they are standard because the law changed in Europe and new cars must include DRL's. Are these the horseshoe shaped lights?

If not, which part of the optional extras do they come under? I thought the R56 MCS came with LED lights as standard, is that not the case?

Thanks.

Horseshoe DRLS are only in conjunction with LEDs. Have you spec'd them?
Thanks for replys and clearing that up. Was confused as I could have sworn that the R56 Mini, Xenons were standard. Seems like a slight backward step that they aren't now.

There is something quite iconic to the lights and this new model. I am a sucker. I will have to find the extra money somehow and ammend my order tomorrow to include.

Only three months wait to go now!

HI, cosmic68, I'm in the same boat as you having ordered the Cooper on the 14th April with lots of goodies but no LED's. Now having read the forum for LED comments, I've added the LED's to my spec at £610. I'll just have to drive carefully to max the mpg and recover the cost. (wishful thinking)

I still have no build date but a rough estimate from the Mini Dealer is the end of July dream on

My bad. I think both have the halo ring. One is called,
'LED headlights with cornering lights' under Safety & Security.
The other "LED headlights and daytime running lights' under Technology. This option is the £610. I find it all a bit confusing.

Could someone explain the benefits of one over the other?

I think you were also right the first time...

LED lights is £670, but £610 if you have the chili pack (the pack already has the white indicators).

LED lights with cornering lights is more expensive and seems to have four prices depending on what else you have (Cooper S, pepper pack, chili pack or nothing).

Much clearer :)

Hi Dave,

Not to alarm you but there are two LED light options. The one I'm talking about is £690 I think with chilli pack, not £610-or did you get a great discount :)
Blinking-ek how many variations are there? I've obviously gone for the £610 package but where do you stop?
As for discount, I managed to get a good price for the MX5 plus an extra £500 off the quote so I'm not grumbling the downside was they got the MX5 straight away.
The next question will be if the delivery goes into August do I wait until September?:nerd: Maybe all these delays are a ploy by BMW to get us to keep adding to the spec. they can't loose can they.

When I tired to add LED headlights to my configuration on Mini UK, it said adding them would remove the Chilli Pack........

Yes, it's a right flaff.

Add them, then when the window comes up to remove chilli pack-select 'manually edit changes'. You can do it that way, with a bit of fiddling. Took me 5 attempts!

Right here we go:

LED headlights = LED headlights with LED DRLs (horseshoes)

LED headlights with cornering lights = LED headlights with LED DRLs (horseshoes) + when the lights are switched in the 'auto' position they do two things: they illuminate the left or the right side of the car at low speeds when driving around corners or parking (and) they throw the light further when you've driven at 68mph or more for 10 seconds or just exceed 87mph or thereabouts.

The LED headlights are great and surprisingly brighter than other xenons on the road. Both come with LED rear light clusters but disappointingly for both, indicators around the car are not LEDs.

Here's a video of the cornering lights in action at low speed.

It shows the view from the side window as the car is turning and you can see the illumination to the side.

Page 190 of the pdf manual (link below) is also interesting. It shows that

  • Halogen headlight includes headlight and turn signal.
  • Halogen fog light includes parking lamp, DRL and fog light.
  • LED headlight includes DRL (horseshoe), headlight and turn signal.
  • LED fog light includes parking lamp and fog light.
I think you're supposed to have the halogen pair or the LED pair and not a mixture.

PDF manual is http://www.miniusa.com/content/dam/...14/2014_MINI_Hardtop_with_Onboard_Monitor.pdf
