Hi all.

We made an unpleasant discovery today on our 2013 Clubman. After using the remote to open the rear doors, the bag containing the key was inadvertently loaded into the rear cargo area along with a large dog.

But when we went to retrieve it, we couldn't. The rear doors were inexplicably locked. With the temperature in the car rapidly escalating, we had to smash the side widow out.

Anybody else experience this phenomenon?

It was opened with the remote. That is some idiotic behavior. The user has deliberately opened the car with the remote, and the whole point is that you're not supposed to be able to lock the key in the car. But this enables just that... in the most likely scenario.

Of several design blunders that plague this car, this one takes the cake.

Thanks for the reply. It's absurd, and totally reproducible. The manual claims that if the key is in the cargo area and the rear doors are closed and locked, the car will unlock and pop the rear door open slightly. First of all, NO, that does not happen, ever. Second... talk about an asinine and overly complicated "solution" to a defective design.

I am still awaiting the arrival of my new mini and have been avidly reading everything I can. I thought I read that you can unlock your car from the Mini app. You would of course not have to have your phone in the locked car! Is that not a "thing"?

Yes if your car supports connected services you can unlock the car remotely from the app anywhere in the world. Not sure about a 2013 car, my 2018 doesn't support it as it's a crossover car but our 2021 Clubman does.

Presumably that would require a cellular radio integrated into the car's internals, and a subscription to cellular service for it. That's a poor solution to a glaring design defect... but I wouldn't put it past them.

Same happend to a friend of mine '18 countryman. He was ready to smash the window but before doing this lethal strike he dropped me a call and asked if I have any idea how to unlock it. He had forgot the app but fortunately he had already paired it so with the app he was able to unlock the car and retrieve the keys.

Unfortunately the app is available for cars made after 2018 so probably its a bad antenna design or low remote battery which leads to weaker signal.

Tltr: app saves smashed windows :)

Thanks. But not an option for the legion of cars made before that, and probably for the majority of those after it too (since they will have no knowledge of it).

These cars have a lot of defective nonsense. Like the radio that switches away from auxiliary to tuner when you plug an auxiliary device in...

I just replicated and fixed exactly this behaviour (with 2016 F54).

Having read OP, I tested how my car behaved, using the spare key.
Purely by chance the spare key's battery was on the way out - It still worked well enough for its buttons to lock/unlock etc, but not well enough for any of the comfort access features to work (so not the little buttons on handles).
In this state things worked exactly as for OP - key got locked in.

Replaced the keyfob battery and things work as advertised: On closing rear door with key inside the car beeps and thows open the rear door. (comfort access stuff also worked again).

Hope this is applicable to OP's car.
