Definitive JCW Brake Clearance and Wheel Fitment Thread

22396 Views 113 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  Minimac
I've searched the forum and we only have bits an bobs of information of info regarding fitting wheels over the JCW Brembo brakes. Pictures are also super important too (I'll share as I go along). I'm not talking 'good enough' fit here, the fit needs to be perfect and not poke beyond arches or foul on the arch when running low (I'm on ST XA coilovers).

I have a Cooper SE which I've fitted the JCW Brembo front brakes. I have two sets of wheels. Firstly, my winter wheels are the JCW track spoke Style 501 7x17 et54 with 205/45 Michelin Alpin tyres (these fit no probs as an OEM wheel).

I'd also bought Sparco Asseto Gara in 8x18 et48 - I'd assumed these fit but they don't clear (I tested last night). Even with a 5mm spacer they don't clear and then we're into ever so slight poke which will foul on the arch when low.

Can we build up a thread that people can find in a search please? If there is a thread please link to it.

Questions from me: which OZ aftermarket wheels fit perfectly? 8x18 et45? 7.5x18 better?

And no, it’s not at the right height yet so apologies for the lack of side shots etc. I have newly painted rear calipers to be fitted.
OZ Leggera Fitment:
Useful OEM wheel info:

Another resource for wheel fitments (it's not precise enough particularly on the JCW/Brembo clearance).

Another resource as a starter for pictures. Again not always useful for JCW fitment.

The yellow caliper looks ace - with the black wheels and British racing green, lovely combo!
Thanks @jk84 - should have full pics of it sat how it should be soon.

Whoa! An SE with the JCW Brembo kit. I don't know if anyone in the states has them on an electric, yet. @Fivetones have you seen any issues with installing the JCW brakes on your SE? The people at my Mini dealer seem to think they'd be incompatible with regenerative brakes, but that should not play into the actual brake system from my understanding.

Love the car, and plan on doing the electric-specific ST suspension soon as well. Check out NM wheels if you want something lightweight and that fits over the JCW brake.

Thanks dude. No issues fitting them, they don’t really interact with the regeneration after all. I didn’t use the JCW rears as they are smaller than the SE standards. I bought the car as a lightweight fun EV so the brakes will come into their own there.

Funnily enough the Neuspeed wheels where the first wheels I started looking at. Having had the fit troubles with the 8”Sparco am I right in thinking the 7.5x18 is the better option for the JCW With the NM wheel? @dbi what fitment are you NM wheels?
@Fivetones I like the yellow calipers!
I'm currently in the same predicament. Trawling the internet for definitive answers on what fits and what doesn't!!

Today I spent some time taking some measurements of the Big JCW calipers. I intend to send the measurements to a wheel manufacturer to ask if a particular rim I have my eyes on, will clear. I thought the measurements might be useful for this thread.
I found that the caliper surface where the John Cooper Works Logo is, was perfectly perpendicular to the brake disc. Ideal for measuring.
Before anyone asks.... that piece of PSE Timber is plumb straight!!

Sparco Trofeo 5
8j x 18 inch ET45

Known to fit.

Sparco Trofeo 5
7.5j x 17 inch ET48 (with 3mm spacers)

The 17 inch wheel is available in either ET35 or ET48. ET35 will clear the Brakes easily, however will stick out quite a bit. ET48 gives about 2mm clearance on the JCW Brembo brakes, adding a set of 3mm spacers up front gives the rim 4-5 mm of clearance to the caliper. 3mm spacers can usually be added without needing to replace mounting hardware. 215/45/17 Tyre on this set up clears front shock and spring nicely.

Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2
As seen on the JCW Challenge Edition
7.5j x 17 inch ET37
Tyres = 215/45/17 Michelin Cup

Alternative offset known to clear Big Brakes
7.5j x 17 inch ET45
Tyres = 215/45/17 Michelin Pilot Sport 4
This setup (7.5j ET45) sits ~15mm outwards than stock (7j ET54). You will not get "too much poke" issue as stock offset is very conservative. The more aggressive offset (7.5j ET37) would suit lowered rides better.

At the time of writing this post, Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 rims in 17 inch are unavailable to be ordered 'brand new'. They only seem to be available as NOS or on the second hand market. I believe the manufacturer of Team Dynamics in the UK, Rimstock, may have struggled during the covid pandemic.

Great info there @Baz550.

This is what the standard 7x17 et54 with 12.5mm spacers look like with a 205/40 Michelin Alpin tyre. Rear is 15mm, the spacers are Bimecc and are nice quality. The rear height not quite dialled yet for reference.

@Baz550 I noticed Team Dynamics seem to be dormant. One of my aims is to go as light as possible with the aim to be efficient. They, and the Sparco, fit the bill.
