One of the engines that the 2014 Mini Cooper is offered with is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder motor. This engine is destined to be offered in the BMW i8 according to the folks at Mini. How much power is that going to produce? Well, in the Cooper it produces 134 horsepower and 162 lob-ft of torque at just 1,250 RPM.

When that same engine is in the i8 it gets more powerful. Then it spits out 231 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. The i8 also gets a boost from an electric motor that bumps its total power way up to 362 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.

Pretty cool, huh?

Are you sure? How come the motor is so weak in the Mini yet so powerful in the i8?

From 134hp to 231hp is no joke. And that is BEFORE the electric motors.... Is the 1.5L 3 in the Cooper super detuned or something?
