Hi all,

Sorry if this has been asked before.

My next door neighbour fitted an HID 6000 Xenon kit to his merc today, I love it and would love these lights on my mini one d f56. But I've searched ebay bulbs.

Firstly, can you just put the bulbs straight in?

Secondly, can you get one for the always on fog lights in the bottom?

Sorry if it sounds silly, Ive no clue!

There is no such thing as a legal HID kit, they should only be fitted where the headlamp was designed for HID bulbs, Halogens are not and are illegal, dangerous to other road users and very irritating.

It all depends on the output, if the light output it to high, the EU says automatic levelling and headlamp wash must be fitted. An eagle eyed MOT tester could fail you on this. Hence most HID kits are ilegal to use on the road. The factory LEDs must have an output lower than that limit, because they don't have headlamp wash, not sure about self level (not got my mini yet), also not sure what would be involved in swapping to LEDs.

If you want brighter headlights the easy route is more powerful bulbs, I can recommend Osram Nightbreakers, but even BMW sell more powerful bulbs. The only downside is bulb life is a little shorter.

Yeah just want brighter bulbs.

Didn't realise it was illegal!

If I wanted brighter bulbs can you get matching ones for the drls

Wish I had got the led halo ring now. Is there any way of retrofitting one or a similar aftermarket product?

DRLs in the lower bumper should be able to be swapped with an LED bulb and are an easy swap, though it may cause the computer to display bulb out warnings if they are not CANBUS type. CANBUS bulbs are made to not throw any warnings.

Simplest to just replace the bulbs you have with Osram Nightbreakers for both the headlights and the DLR's, they will be nice a bright, and you won't get any error message, and its legal. Your mini manual will explain how, just don't touch the bulb glass as you do it.

Also look at Phillips 130% H4's as well as the Osram to replace the headlamp bulbs. Got mine on-line from Power Bulbs (discount codes abound). Also swapped the sidelights for Phillips Blue Vision at the same time for a whiter light.

I looked at swapping the DRL bulbs but it's an odd fitment and there isn't much about at present. You could go for LEDs however I believe they are not currently legal though of course you'll have three years grace until the first MOT ;-) Then there is the CANBUS issue as well potentially throwing an error message. Let us know if you track down any error free ones.

Regards Bob

This sounds silly but where are the side lights. I only have one bulb in my front headlight?
Can't believe you have actually asked this.

Turn your sidelights/parking lights on and get out of your car, walk to the front and have a look.

I might have some spare Osram nightbreakers and a matching set of Osram sidelight bulbs they all give a lovely bright blue(ish) light and are fully legal - they were on my R56 and I now have LEDs on my F55 - I'm not entirely sure they are the same but I'm guessing they are. Maybe someone can confirm.

I've just moved house, but if I can find them you can have them for free, as you sound like you need a bit of help. I'm only the other side of Henfield and am usually in Brighton at some point most weekends.

Let me see if I can dig them out and I'll let you know

Oh mate cheers you're really kind. I'm Henfield anyway what a star. Do you know if they'll fit?

Oh and thanks Caveman Dave. Really appreciated your comment there. Very helpful. Sorry I don't know what every description of light it. I know what sidelights are but if you saw I said it only has one Light bulb in my front headlight from what I can see

I've thoroughly researched this topic as I wanted to change the bulbs in an F56 base (no led headlights).

The bottom line is this

Headlight: H4. Only 1 bulb for both H/L
Driving lights: W5W/T10/194
Fog Lights: PSX24W/H16

The DRL and the fog ones are TOGETHER inside the small headlight below the main one.

To replace all three you need to be careful in selecting the same light temperature for all, otherwise the aesthetics of the arrangement is lost.

This is what I've done:

- H4: Phillips X-treme Vision +130% 3700K. Installed and working.

- W5W/T10/194: 194 CAN Bus LED Bulb 4500K. Installed and working. No error message. The temperature difference is noticeable, but not too much. With a 5000K I tested it looked almost blue and the difference is too big.

- PSX24W/H16: Undecided. Haven't found any LED below 5000K. If someone knows about a 4000K LED with this socket let me know. It does not matter if it is not CAN bus ready, as one can install a CAN bus warning canceler for $20 USD.
