Hi everyone

Does anyone know if it would be possible to install a multi- functional steering wheel as a retro fit with the dealer or something when I've got my car? I wanted to add it but was too late :(

I have ordered the PEPPER Pack which comes with the same leather steering wheel by the way.

THANKS!! :)

I do not a definative answer but think it very unlikely.

Unlike a lot of recent cars the wiring harness on the new MINI is specific to the options ordered (as descibed during the factory tours I understand). So in general the harness is the minimum for complexity necessary in your car and there are no spare connectors I think.

Thank you Sunbar for your reply. Think it will be unlikely as well :(

Hello, I have a question concerning retrofitting because of the steering wheel. I have a Cooper F56 petrol machine ordered with JCW interior and exterior kit and JCW steering wheel. Unfortunately, on the Cooper there was no option to order the steering wheel with shift paddles, but only at the Cooper S with sports transmission. I found at OEM Parts different steering wheels, especially the JCW which I now ordered (automatically included) and with the shift paddle where I would like.
Here is the link to the different OEM parts:

Here I have pictures and part numbers about my steering wheel and the one I'd like to install:

JCW steering wheel paddle without
JCW steering wheel with paddle

From what I see as the difference is only the steering wheel itself with another number (logical) but also the connecting line steering wheel (which is logical as the paddle must be connected. The steering wheel with paddles I have found for € 291.- , which is relatively low (plus the connection kit and installation).

I asked Mini UK about the possibility to retrofit, but they say it is not. I'm still not sure if that true or if Mini just want to keep the paddles for the S model.

Does anyone have experiences with this? Does anyone know whether to append the ports for the new connection line by the paddle, are already present at each Mini?

Thank you for your input.

The common theme for retrofitting factory options is that you can't. Every car is customized at the factory, including hardware mounting points, CAN bus integration, and software. Like with the perpetual "can I add LED lights?" questions, I think it would take a colossal hack at the very least and may not even be possible.

Yes, you can (probably) mount the paddled steering wheel, but then you have to find a way to hack into the CAN bus so that it recognizes the paddles. No, the wiring isn't there (the wiring harnesses are custom made based on your build options). Then once you tap the CAN bus, you have to change the software to recognize the paddles. If you're lucky, it's just a code (though I doubt it, since the Justa cannot be ordered with the paddles), if you're not then the shifting logic is deep in the firmware and changeable only with a reflash, which MINI isn't going to provide, since the code probably doesn't even exist.

So nope. Impossible without some epic hack. But knock yourself out; if you actually get it working, we'd love to hear how you did it.

I had a 2013 BMW 116D Auto, and the paddle shift wheel could be fitted and coded although dealers would say not, I did not in the end put a paddle shift on, but I did fit Cruise control with LIM, instead of just the LIM function and had it remotely coded.

The biggest problems anybody will incur is finding someone that knows how to code and the codes required, also if the car is updated at a dealers it will remove all the NON-dealer coding.

I retro fitted a MFSW on a 2nd gen car, it required a new slip-ring switch block, and steering wheel stitches, it then had to be coded. My local dealer said it could not be done, but a MINI dealer in Blackpool did it for me.

From looking at RealOEM, there is no specific slip-ring switch for MFSW's, the steering wheel switches have about 10 different combinations due to options, but the connections are all the same, therefore it is more than likely that it is purely software driven, but definitely will not be plug and play.

A good place for info on what can and cannot be coded would be www.bmwcoding.com

Dukes right much harder on the new mini due to the custom wiring loom. No wiring there.
The MFSW controls are via canbus, so the connections are there as the switch cluster they plug into does not offer variations as to whether MFSW switches have been spec'd or not.

@Astraeus - I wish you luck, because if that goes wrong or messes up software/firmware then it will be hugely stressful, particularly with a brand new car!

Also I would imagine the cost of the fix may involve you rocking up to the dealership, dropping the trunks and bending over! They'll maybe be sporting and give you the old steering wheel to bite down on!

This has been done at the dealership i work in?
Is this a MINI dealership, if so name them, if it helps people to make up there minds, and possibly even visit the dealer to get the work done.

Could you tell me what are exactlybthevsteps to do? By MFSW with paddles, Mayer Connection cable and then? What have the Dealer to do in the canbus? I asked my Dealer and he said, that it is Not possible, as he just checked the configuration of my Car and found no Option on the MfSW. This is clear, otherwise I Could Order it, but it is always a Way to do it. When do you know it, Could you explain it to me, so that I can inform my Dealer to do it on my Car?
