So my mom has had her 2015 hardtop for 2 months now. One of the key fob stopped working. She has no comfort access. The car is base model with nothing in it.

Anyhow, I told her instructions how to get in which was to pop the cover on the door handle, insert key, then later put the fob next to the ignition and start the car. That worked. But in terms of pushing unlock, lock, buttons, nothing works. Even remote start won't work unless you place the key next to the ignition steering column.

The nuisance and question now is, how would she lock the car when she exits the vehicle?? (Assuming she is not home to replace the battery or key fob). It seems to me this is a very, very poor design on BMW. In order to lock her car, she needs to get out, pop the cover on the door handle, insert and lock the car. Then put the cover back in.

This whole process needs to repeat until she finds the nearest walgreen to replace the key fob battery. And she does not know how to replace it herself.

Sounds like she needs to sit down and read through the owner's manual. Many of the solutions to the issues she is experiencing she could rectify by perusing the chapters.

No offense should be taken from it, but it astounds me how many people DON'T read their manuals. Those will give you the best advice on how to make the most out of their car.

Also, that is not really a design flaw. How would she get into the vehicle if her fob failed and say she was stuck outside in freezing temperatures, or left something in the car that couldn't be exposed to extreme heat? She should probably grab an extra battery when she gets to Walgreen's to help mitigate further fob drained batteries.

Sounds like BMW considered this fact to help prevent lawsuits that could occur.

I believe all the Minis come with two fobs? Couldn't she also use the other one?
