I searched and couldn't find a thread which completely covers this. I have a 2015 Mini Cooper S F56 and love it, but the breaking is horrible. Every time I break, as it gets closer to 0, it jolts/lunges. Very annoying. It's like it can't properly downshift. This happens in any mode (green, mid, sport) I am in. Oh yea, I have an automatic transmission.

Any suggestions?
Should I take it to the dealer or is this normal for the mini?

Yes, automatic transmission. Will reach out my dealership (US) for a service request. Thanks for the feedback.
Mine does this, I think it's just a characteristic of the gearbox - which you could see as an unfortunate characteristic.

I find it extremely hard to stop without the engine cutting off before I've come to a complete stop, which I then end up almost going through the windscreen due to the breaks becoming more effective as the engine is off and not propelling the car further.

This is somewhat fixed by turning start stop off, but I feel this gearbox is very much in correlation to BMW i's brand initiative of the one pedal driving, in such that it has such excessive engine breaking that you should you drive looking far enough a head that you only need to use the break pedal to stop the car from creeping - not actually using it to slow down.

But I agree, it's lurches especially when trying to creep with Auto Start/Stop engaged.

OH and the downshift from third to second could be considered as a jolt... I guess.

I am used to excessive engine braking, I drove a 7 once from 100 miles in rush hour on the M25/M1 for a track day, only to find there was more air in the brakes than fluid after a late nigh brake overhaul and someone had forgotten to bleed them. The brakes are just not needed on the road, because the engine is enough.

I have an Auto MCS, and there is a very slight brake drag (not sure drag is the right word), but it doesn't jerk or lunge. You can feel the fact your holding the engine and car, but its smooth on my car all the way to the stop. I am guessing a MCSD my not be as smooth as the revs drop, given the nature of the diesel engine, and I guess the drag effect could also be worse given the higher compression.

I keep the start/stop button off. Hate it. If yours is doing it too, you didn't have the dealership look into it?
I haven't had them look at it because I've just taken it that that's how a traditional auto is, the only comparison I have is my dad's CLS which has either the 7G or 9G gearbox which is super smooth.

If you have them look at it and they find that it needs adjusting or a firmware update let me know and I'll book mine in.

Take your MINI back to the dealer and have the software for the transmission reinstalled. That's what I did and it helped immensely.:)

I have a jcw auto so assuming its the same box. It definately shouldn't jolt like you said. There is some engine braking but not severe and mine is pretty smooth. There is an issue. If the dealer says there isnt, ask to take another mcs auto for a drive and compare.

I've just emailed my dealer as my folding mirror motors are in need of replacement, I've asked her to reinstall the software/firmware for the gearbox as it seems to lunge when it goes in for the mirrors with is tbc.

To be fair I do recall recently actually it felt like I was going to stall the car, I set off quite quickly but then someone decided to stop in front of me.. So when coming to a stop it felt like it couldn't let go of the gear quick enough?

Haven't had the chance to go to dealership yet. I also want them to remove the cloth between the rear glass and pillar which is visible. There is an active thread about that issue here too. Hopefully, early next month. I believe the jolt/lunge happens when I decrease (by breaking) to 20 mph then to 0. Whatever gear shift that is.

I have checked if there are any outstanding programming campaigns/updates outstanding on your car which there isn’t but we can definitely have a look into it for you when you bring your car in to us.

Are you planning on bringing yours in?

My car is going in in the future (TBC due to unknown part availability) so I'll get them to look at it then, although I do think I'm just trying to find faults now... I've found if I don't drive it like I stole it then it doesn't 'jolt' on down changes but we'll see what they have to say.
