I'd like to know whether it actually provides an increase in performance. I've seen mixed reviews on whether it is worth installing or not on a number of vehicles. I had one on my WRX and it didn't seem to make a difference.

You heretic!

I'm not listening to what you say any more. La la la la [fingers in ears].

Next you will be suggesting that more noise doesn't automatically mean more power or that stripes don't make you go faster.

Have you checked your tail to see if the end is forked?

Suck (not in the US sense) > Bang > Blow ... anything that makes it breathe better and has a longer life must be good.

Had a long life foam filter on both R56 and '02 One (R53) with noticeably better breathing, increase in induction 'roar', throttle response when mapped

I was convinced how less restrictive they are when I saw the K&N table tennis ball over a fan with a paper / free flow filter comparison video - http://www.knfilters.co.uk/news/news.aspx?id=1378

Correct but this is not an open cone filter but a replacement of the OEM filter material in the existing filter housing.

Had a K&N filter in my previous MINI and must admit that it sounded better but I didn't really notice an increase in power or lower fuel consumption.
Agree with the above.... just installed this last week - sounds slightly better but no noticeable increase in power

I did a search for a thread about oiled filters as I just ordered and received it in the mail yesterday and installed it today. I have not made the opportunity to drive it and see what the butt dyno says, but I like the looks better and you can clean and re-oil it easy enough and I already have everything for that in the #2 toy shed. I did see there was some issues with the oil fouling some sensors on another forum. I have never had any issues with oiled filters over many years, but that is pre electronic gizmo times. Has anyone recently tried an oiled filter in their F56?

I think they were fouling the MAF due to over oiling. If you follow K & N's directions and lightly oil the ridges and let the oil wick naturally to the rest of the filter you shouldn't have a problem. I'm using an oiled conical filter in the RAM intake on my Vette and never had a problem, even with that overpriced Granatelli MAF installed. The ArmaSpeed I have on the Mini uses an oiled conical filter too. No problems there either.

Thanks, I have them on the flying toy and they are great, and I have had them on other cars as well over the years, but never on a newer generation auto. I was reading on another forum and they were having sensor issues. But, as you said a little oil goes a long way. I was cleaning my OEM filter and it looked pretty grubby, so I started looking into other filters. With mattress foam on the outside of the OEM filter over the paper element it seems like it would be very restrictive. I will see how it does soon enough. I have the K & N installed and ready to rock and roll.

I have been running my KN Cone Filter now for 3 Years on the 3 and the same filter on the 4 Cylinder Engine not once did I had an engine light coming on. I have to say since I cleaned my filter a couple of weeks ago the car does not pop and bang as much as before.:( Now if you run the KN Filter in the stock airbox I would not know.

I have the KN on my stock air box, and, for me, it doesn't bring any difference.
Perhaps, a little bit more noise under hard accélérations...........
I had one on all my previous cars ( porsche 911, Peugeot 205 GTI ) and on my actual motor bike ( Yamaha 1000 Fazer ).
The reason ??
The longevity of that type of air filter.
As I'm use to keep my toys a long time, it's worth the money spent !
