Hi all,

So last Saturday I went for my first good drive in the MCS, it was popping and crackling all over the place :) detailed the car on Sunday and ever since quite as a mouse :(

Same conditions, everything hot, the only difference was in the ambient temperature and the fact I had polished the exhaust so it was like a mirror.

Any ideas or do I need to take a trip to the dealer to ask why it has stopped popping!

Help!

I don't have an S, but does some of the sound of the engine not come from a digital track played through a speaker in the rear area of the car?
Maybe a wire has fallen off!?

Apologies if that is just rubbish, sure I read it somewhere though!

In the old days of adjustable carburettors you could make an exhaust make a popping noise on the overrun by excessively leaning off the fuel mixture. Perhaps your ECU had decided to richen the mixture fractionally for some reason.

The crackles and pops are REAL. Trust me. Not some improvised noise.

Been driving my MCS for a month now in sport and still have never gotten the pop or sound. What am I doing wrong? I'm in the US, could that play a part? I didn't spec the JCW tuning either.
hi ,

I don't have a MCS but as I understand the popping and crackling is available in sport mode but on the overrun , so you have to shut the throttle abruptly at high to middling rpm. They overfuel it to make the sound

I hear it in my 2015 MCS occasionally, under conditions like @CO2slave describes.

I don't believe that the snap, crackle & pop comes from Active Sound; you can hear it from outside the car. The only thing I hear from Active Sound (as far as I can tell) is the growl under hard acceleration.

But then my ears have heard better days. Maybe I'll enlist a teenager to tell me if AS is popping or not...

Car needs to be warmed up, in SPORT.

You hear it better as it breaks in. When I got my Countryman, I didn't really start hearing the pops until I had about 1000 miles on it.

I don't have an MCS. Mine is "justa" Cooper but I alway hear the snap, crackle and pop noise when ever I am driving away from a visit to a mexican restaurant. It doesn't quite sound like it is coming from the back of the car but try it and see if it works for you.

Greenhouse Gas, eh? Contributing to Global Warming. Your punishment: Drive in Green Mode for 6 months. And switch to Chinese restaurants.

I am telling you guys. This ASD is amazing. Unless you are actually outside the car then you would not know. There is absolutely NO difference to the engine between Sport and Normal mode. Just the electric throttle response is more aggressive so it feels like you have more power - there is no timing change or mixture change. Ask the tuners they will tell you. So crackle...my car is very quiet with out the electronic sound. I run a burger tune on mine too - so I'm around 220hp no crackle. Will see if that changes with a JCW tuning kit!
