I love the screen in the middle of the dash, but am I the only one slightly underwhelmed by the actual SatNav part of the system?
No speed limit indicators
No safety camera information
Traffic information option which actually doesn't provide any traffic info worth having?
Even basic off the shelf systems, for less than 100 quid, give you that much. I'd rather have that than 3D imagery which is of very little practical use.
Also, if you use the split screen, and have your hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel, you can't actually see the information you need i.e. how near the next turn is...you have to keep moving your hands.

Couldn't agree more. Was so unimpressed-I left it off the order (even though I really wanted the HUD too).
At such a huge price, too. In the end I went for the HUD, with just the basic speedo/contact information (can't say if it's worth it as don't have the car yet).
I've never heard great things in general about BMW nav. Smartphones seem to be able to do 4 times as much currently...

I don't have much experience with sat navs, except for the Garmin I use in my camper van, which is endlessly irritating.

The Mini's sat nav has been great in its prompts and directions. It's given me the info I need at the right moment and having the junction diagram on the HUD screen is fantastic (Media XL users can go for split screen to get the same diagram).

It's the junction diagram on the split screen which is difficult to see, as it is on the right hand side, so partly obscured by the steering wheel (or at least, your hands on it). It would have been easier to see if the junction bit was on the left hand side, but I don't think you have the option on the split screen, to choose which info goes left or right. I bit the bullet and paid for the in built SatNav, but may end up putting my old TomTom back in the car, as its cameras/speed limits and traffic info are way better. But hey, at least I can suction it to the central console, rather than having to put it in the windscreen (I used to do this on my first gen Mini, but then missed this ability in the 1 series Coupe I had after that)

I really wish I'd paid the extra 250 and gone for the XL over the standard nav (Media XL is £1175 with Chili, I paid £330+£595 = £925 for enhanced Bluetooth and standard Nav :(

(I didn't know about the drop in price of Media XL with Chili until I was messing around with the configurator the other day - too late to change my order of course!)

Did I imagine it when we had a MCS demo car with XL and HUD that the current speed limit is displayed in the HUD?

I hope it is since we've chosen those options on our MCS!

The sat nav turn info is definitely shown in the HUD.

You didn't imagine it, but it's on the separate 'drivers package', which is £££'a more on top of satnav.
If you haven't ordered that package you won't see the speed limits. This is why I stuck to my Tom Tom.

Ensure that S5ASA driving assistant is in your spec. I think it's about £780 extra, on top of the Media XL. This uses the on board camera to 'see' road signs and display speeds. Different to a TomTom system, which calls up the speed info from the database...the satnav alone does not otherwise have this functionality...not sure why, as local speed limits don't change so often as to warrant this.

I'm not experienced with satnav in general but I did get media XL for my mini. It seems like an excellent system with clear and detailed verbal instructions, including lane guidance at some junctions (although not always perfect). The turn instructions on the HUD are very handy with countdown to the junction and road names or numbers.

I do wish you could tune how far in advance the announcements are... it's not that they are last minute but at the moment it is an act of faith for me. And it would be good to be able to find tune the route... maybe setting up a trip is the way to do it... haven't tried. At the moment I get two or three alternatives to choose from. And the map isn't very detailed when you zoom right in.

I think it is more capable than I have tried so far... I like it.

I guess it depends on your experience of other systems...it's fine as far as it goes, but once you are used to a system which advises speed limits, you stop looking for road signs...the info is right there in front of you. I drive in and around London, so 20/30/40/50 limits aren't always immediately obvious, if you miss a road sign...and cameras are plentiful, so the camera bit is crucial too! It just seems odd not to include the speed limits in the database, along with the other road information, like other basic systems do. Updating the database in the unlikely event that a speed limit changes can't be that onerous...and other manufacturers manage to do this.
On the plus side, the voice recognition software is brilliant, even with very unusual road names...way better than the TomTom.

I have been using the Google Sat Nav on my phone for many years. Its better than the built in in Hubbies new Jag. My only dilemma is what holder to get for my phone! May start a thread!

sadly the sat nav is based on the BMW professional system (which I have to endure in my partners 5 series) it's slow and often leads me to completely the wrong place - praise the lord for tom-tom on my iPhone as it's got me out of so many pickles - visual boost in my MINI does everything I want it to do and the saving on the satnav got me HK speakers and LED lights which I can't imagine now not having

Live and learn...one assumes that, as it is so gob-smackingly expensive, it is bound to be good! With this, and the ongoing issues with accessing playlists on the hard drive, I would recommend anyone considering spending the 1200 odd quid on MediaXL, to opt for the enhanced Bluetooth, and then buy TomTom for your phone for £55. Spend the money on the LED lights, as MD1 recommends, and the sun roof, both of which are great to have.

Can anyone explain me why?
Do you have the Active Driving Assist package? I believe this is required for speed limit info.

Just a guess, but did you order the Drivers Assistant Pack, which includes the road sign reading camera? Maybe that is the only way to get it?
