Only got my car on Monday, but it's already inherited a real loud squeal, both when driving and when parked. Below is a video of it when parked, has anyone experienced this before? I'm taking it back to mini tomorrow to have it looked at but hope its nothin too bad :( just thought I would see if anyone has had this problem too and found out what it was..

Also didn't matter if it was in sport, mid or green modes..

Well the technician at mini has put the squealing noise down to possible delivery wax on one of the belts which along with moisture made the squeal so they have cleaned the belts with some cleaner so hopefully no more squealing :)

Just in case anyone has this problem mini basically have no idea what is making the noise, after several visits to mini to have the following carried out the squeal was still there.
Cleaned belts
Cleaned all hoses and pipes
Stripped engine down
Turbo replaced
Hoses replaced

I personally think it was a bearing from the gearbox or even the alternator. Good luck to anyone else who gets this problem as mini had no clue what it was.

Any resolution to this? I'm having the same exact issue. I got the noise the first time 2 nights ago, and it happened again tonight. I'll be calling the dealer tomorrow hoping its not super serious. Pretty bummed because the car has 1200 miles on it.

Hi all - I had an F56 Cooper S as a rental for the past week as my 1 series was in for repair and it also had this squealing noise. It sounded more like an old kettle boiling from inside the car. The car 500 miles on it, it sounds like it could be a more widespread problem.

As the car was a rental, I wasn't too concerned, but I hope you get it fixed.

My F56S has a bit over 5000 KM and so far the engine was always sounding and behaving great! Including many small trips in freezing temps.

However 2 days ago it started making exactly the same noise. It's clearly related engine-rebs, and trends to happen more on sports mode.

FYI, I did a very careful engine run-in but now I'm driving the car as it was meant to be.

Any more feedback before I go to the dealer with yet another complain?

Mine happened very early in life 1300 miles, basically after not taking rpms above 4k for the first 1200 miles it happened the 2nd and 3rd time going to 5k. They replaced my entire trans, except for the clutch. I have had the car back maybe 3 weeks and have not heard the sound, took it on a decent drive yesterday roughly 60 miles each way and didn't experience anything so I'm hoping its sorted.

If you can shoot any videos of the issue that will help, I know my service advisor was thrilled to have the vids.

I couldn't play your video...said the file was corrupt!

These sorts of stories is what makes me "pause" when I am considering buying a MINI. I have been so close to buying recently (looking at used and new, across all three generations), and the more research I do the worse I feel about these cars...my BMW mechanic is not a fan at all! Sure they are fun road-hugging cars, but when reliability ratings are in the tank and I constantly hear and see these sorts of things, I just want to give up my search and walk away.

I need convincing I'm not an absolute idiot to pursue one of these cars!!! :(

My Cooper is nearly one year old and is needing a damper changed, which will be done next week.

Apart from a nut replacement on the spare wheel holder and the damper change, the car has performed and behaved beautifully.

It is a joy, in fact, I can't wait to get back in it and get driving!

If things do go wrong, as they can do with all cars, they will be fixed.

I hear you....but, sometimes we need to be practical. When it comes to cars, I'm very impractical....I'm a true enthusiast, cars are like art and become a part of me in the process of "becoming one with the car!" But, when someone plunks down $30,000+ for a new car I don't expect to see anything go wrong for a very long time!

Mini Dealers are not on every corner in the USA, so location of the Dealer is a big factor when buying new. I can see me going to the Dealer constantly for "something" based on what I see on the various forums, and that frightens me honestly.

Ok, maybe I'll calm down...but for now I guess I'll just have to be shown how these cars won't break my wallet.

Cheers,

John
