My Mini JCW was purchased in January this year. It took 3.5 months wait time and landed in Australia in April. This is my first brand new car I have purchased, all my other cars were second hand. Never thought I would ever own a Mini and I have to say I'm so happy with the purchase minus a few annoying hiccups that went with buying a new car.

Overall the build quality is great and I have no major problems with it. I think the car dealer could have done a better job selling me the options. Being a new car I thought some things were standard such as the ability to unlock the car when I open the door. I only realised after that this was extra and need to be purchased as part of the comfort access option.

Some things I would have done differently is adding sunroof and black front and rear lights. My Mini is pepper white with JCW black bonnet stripes and black roof and mirror caps

I love this car and provide it runs well and is easy to maintain will likely purchase it again for my next car

I have a few questions though if anyone can help....I'm still not sure if my car locks when I walk away from it...it doesn't appear to do that so I have to remote lock and secondly does anyone's know how to work the follow me home lights?

Hi trini, welcome to the forum and huge congrats on your first new car! Like me I've never bought brand new and my first is my JCW, had him 2 months now and loving it :)

Locking: unless you had the 'comfort access' option, you will always have to press a button on the remote to lock/unlock. The only time it will lock itself is if you unlock it and don't open any door, then after a short time it relocks (this is a configurable option in settings)

When you unlock with the remote, either all doors unlock, or only the drivers door... again this is a settings option. So is 'lock on driving away'.

When you press lock on remote when walking away, the hazards flash, surely you ALWAYS look back at you new car when leaving her?! :) I think this is a settings option. Lots of choice!

Get me home lights: duration can be changed in settings (seeing a pattern here!) but making them work is a trick -
Pull the indicator/lights stalk towards you (flash lights) activates the see me home lights, but...
Your ignition has to be off first. So if you've pulled up and the car's auto stopped and you just get out, they won't work. You must push the start/stop switch to switch off, then flash lights. They should stay on for the time chosen in settings. Get out and lock up as usual. I can make in to my front door and get my key in the lock in 40 seconds, unless I have shopping!

Have fun reading the manual, that's where all these tricks are detailed. I'm still trying out and learning all the little foibles, but I love it and it's what makes MINI quirky and unique for me.

Have fun! Andy.

Hi Andy,

Thanks so much for your reply!

I've been checking the forum for a response for my query....kind of like waiting for my online shopping goods to be delivered!!

Congrats on your recent purchase of the mini...please upload picks i'd love to see what colour and specs you have :)

I recently sent BMW an email as I have a few questions regarding "unlocking of options"

I saw on this forum someone had offered a free service to unlock some options and he offered to do it remotely...I'm thinking this is a gimmick

Anyways to give you an idea here is a list that I would like my mini to do that is currently not doing

1. Enable illumination of exterior door handle LED when in reverse
2. Enable video files from USB
3. Enable speech input for email or SMS
4. Enable automatic locking of doors when I leave the car and close the door - I currently use the remote to lock the car

I wonder if yours is able to do the above? I'm waiting for a reply from BMW and when I have a response will sure to post it here for you to see as well

Once again congrats and hello from me from the land Down Under ;)

Hi there, I think the clever 'options' you listed are achieved with 'coding'. I doubt BMW can help you with the unofficial ones. A specialist/enthusiast/geek with a laptop and interface into your car (OBD?) is required. My take on your list:

1. Never heard of this one... why!?
2. Video from USB I thought was already possible, must be regional, so it may be inhibited in Aus. Can be coded (hacked).
3. I can't do voice SMS or Email, but I think it's phone dependant anyhow too, so too complicated for me to want to do! Probably can be coded if it's region locked too.
4. I think this is impossible without Comfort Access. But, you never know!

If you can find a nice forum member who codes, I'm sure they'll know loads more than me!

Here's 2 posts of mine with my car spec and some pics:

Look forward to hearing what BMW say! :) Andy

Hi Andy,

So BMW replied with the following

3. Enable speech input for email or SMS . already an item on the car or can
be done by SIRI when holding the voice input button on the steering wheel
when using an I phone

4. Enable 'follow me home' lights. Can be done in settings

5. Enable automatic locking of doors when I leave the car and close the door
- I currently use the remote to lock the car. Can be done in settings

I was able to activate follow me home lights after your reply yesterday so thanks for that - going to be going thru the settings again for the automatic locking of doors

I use a Samsung so not sure if the voice to text will work but sure will be tinkering around and see if i can get this to work

Shall keep you posted :)

Hi There Triniinamini,
I don't know whereabouts in AUS you are, I am based in SW Sydney. I have the Carly Adaptor and ios App to do some coding, see this link http://support.mycarly.com/knowledge-base/code-bmw-what-is-possible/
I have not used it much on my F56, but if you are fairly local I may be able to assist. Depends on how local you are and timing of our work and family commitments.

Anyway check out the link, it will give you ideas on what is theoretically possible. Not all of the codings may be able to be applied.

PM me if you want to, to discuss further.

Hope this helps.

Hi Trini, yes voice to text control - that does ring a bell that iPhones can do it with Siri... not an option for me, I'm also using Android.

If you find the answer to no.5 'automatic locking' I'd be really interested to learn how you manage it. I still don't think it can be done, though it's nice of BMW to get back to you with these answers! Imagine how easy it would be to lock your key in the car!!!

Cheers, Andy.
