The latest in front-wheel drive performance from MINI is being previewed today by the brand in advance of its Detroit Auto Show debut next month.

MINI unveiled its new generation of Cooper and Cooper S hatchbacks during the L.A. Auto Show in November and now the company is preparing a concept preview of its John Cooper Works variant. While the car shown here is still a concept, the company says it is close to production spec. Count the brushed metal-looking finish among the touches that aren’t likely to make the final cut.

Judging by current models, most of what the new JCW concept wears looks like standard fare. It wears 18-inch wheels and the usually aggressive body kit designed to improve aerodynamics and downforce during high-speed driving. A stiffer suspension and high-performance brakes will also be a part of the package.

The brand hasn’t shown interior photos yet, but a more driver-focused cabin is one of the changes you can expect based on changes to the parent models. Similarly, MINI hasn’t said anything about engine performance. Rumors suggest the car’s turbocharged four-cylinder will make 210 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels through a six-speed manual. The 0-60 mph sprint is supposed to happen in a hair under six seconds although the brand hasn’t confirmed that either.

What is with the very back of the roof? Is that supposed to be a spoiler? It just looks really strangely shaped to me.

I really like what they did to the rear end though with the double exhaust and the rear bumper.
