I have just recently acquired a 2007 mini cooper s works but after some driving was alarmed at some new engine noises I was hearing.
Especially when starting from cold, I was told when I purchased the car that it had just had an oil change & service & was only at 63,000 kms. When I checked the oil on the dipstick, (stupid to read), there was none to be seen! I added a full 1 litre of synthetic oil & still could not see exactly where I was on this stupid dip stick. The point is the added oil cured the horrible engine noises, but why did the engine oil light not come on? Exactly how low does the oil have to get before the light comes on? What damage might it have done already to my engine? How much oil does a low mileage mini supposed to use when driven by a docile female?
Thank you to anyone who can shed some light on these concerns of mine.
Regards

Not to brush you off, but this is an F series forum which is the 2.0 liter Boxter engine. You have an R series 1.6 liter engine. You should have better luck on the R forum. There is a search feature and you can input your question there. Good Luck.

Hi Dopper, welcome.

Yeah mainly all F series MINIs here but this might help..

You have the N14 engine in your JCW, this has an awful dipstick to read plus they are prone to use oil, I had 3 and no issues but some people were using a litre ever 800 miles which MINI say is within tolerance!

The other known issue is the timing chain/adjuster etc. Commonly known as "the death rattle".

They do also rattle if oil is low so keep a close eye on the level.

A couple of forums you could read up on is mini2 & totalMINI there are lots of others also.

Thank you guys for your answers, & sorry if I posted this under the wrong mini model.
My days date back to when I had a 1964 mini cooper back in England this was my first car & I kept it for 8 years.
I knew that car inside out, it is nothing like this one, except perhaps the handling.
