Both petrol and diesel are produced in a small number of refineries therefore it's the same fuel used by the different companies, however the difference is that each company then adds it's own cleaning agent packages. The likes of Shell and BP use their own secret recipes and are supposed to be better than supermarket brands. If you read the descriptions of the standard Shell/BP diesel on their websites they don't sound that much different from the descriptions of their Optimax/Ultimate diesels, in that both offer superior cleaning/smoother engine running, except that the fancy diesel costs more. Having read a number of articles on the web regarding this subject it does appear that the branded fuels such as Shell/BP are of a better quality than supermarket fuel due to the better cleaning packages but the Optimax/Ultimate fuel etc are not worth the extra cost. Fifth Gear on Youtube have a good article on this subject where cars were tested using the different fuels. I myself use Shell's Fuel Save diesel, and my MCSD runs really fine, I have tried Optimax and found no difference apart from the price.

I use standard Texaco diesel in mine and it runs very well on that.

Well for me that part is def not true, I do lots of motorway miles and I get more out of a tank with BP Ultimate (my regular) than I do with regular diesel (by about 20-30 miles). So in my SD I can get if im clever circa 560 miles out of a tank, where as its closer to 525 without. Not massive over a tank but Ive only had to put non "super" in twice and both times it returned less over a long journey (450+ miles return). Obviously this is all subjective as Which? wont have tested the Mini F56, they may have only tested a handful of cars and probably drained the tank but never ran say 2-3 tanks through before measuring?

Either way I wont be recommending anyone goes super fuel, just putting my 10 pence in that for me im happy doing so and from my experiences im happy to keep doing so. As always, dont always believe what you read in magazines or the internet :)

Although when Which? magazine tested 'super' fuels, they found that BP Ultimate diesel (the only 'super' diesel they tested) gave slightly less fuel economy and slightly less power than regular diesel.
Blast back to  mode!

I would have to use bp too as it is my local garage...

Each to their own mate, some people dont believe the hype, others also stay away from supermarket fuels because they have had their fair share of bad press over the years (I dont use them myself just BP/Shell). We all want more power and better MPG, but if all they advertised was a clearner more efficent engine you might never use it. Best thing to do is use a few tanks of the good stuff (say 3), then switch back to the normal and if you dont feel a difference in either drivability or MPG and you cant feel a difference then you can keep to the regular. Just dont change your driving style to try and make it a good test.

Sounds like a plan :)

Definitely agree with the above.

I picked the car up and drove straight to the nearest Shell garage for V Power Diesel and have pretty much run that ever since! I find that personally I'm getting around 10% better mpg with V Power and on average it's 6-8% more expensive than regular diesel.

Also worth bearing in mind is that the fuel management system 'learns' the grade of fuel and can adjust to the higher octane (higher resistance to detonation) fuels, so if you can avoid switching between fuel grades each tank and keep it consistent.

After brimming the SD tank sometimes the gauge reads 540+ miles in range, then after leaving the forecourt it goes up to 560+ range.. or at least I think that's what's happening :D
