PREP HELP: Driving the Mini cross country

5739 Views 10 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  funkdrummer
In July I'll be relocating from Southern Louisiana to Oregon. I'll be driving my automatic Hardtop MC the 2,600 miles in 4-5 days. I'm looking for advice from the forum about this trip. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Currently: 9562 miles driven since mid October with 33.8mpg efficiency.
- my first checkup will be just before the trip.
- I will wash and wax the car just before leaving.

Are there any things you would recommend for before/during/after the trip to ensure future motoring fun?

check all the fluids, tyre presures etc. make sure your roadside assistance service is up to date!
Take a both still camera and video camera and do a road trip movie.
Then put the pics on the forum and send us a link to the vid :D

I always pack a massive flashlight in addition to smaller ones if driving at night.

Don,t pick up Hitch Hikers near a Prison.:D

Flash Light is a must Anti Freeze and Fix A Flat. Have plenty off cold Water in a Cooler with you it is getting hot out here already. If you have room in the Boot take a fullsize Tire with you already mounted.

Here is a little Insider Tip go thru Las Vegas take the 93/95 from LV to Idaho and than hop on the I 80 to go West to Oregon. The old 93/95 is a blast to drive wide open Roads no Cops for Hours and fantastic Scenes. I took this Road once a Week when I was running from Phx to Portland with my Semi. Great Drive.

When my car was less than one month old we did a trip from West coast Canada to Portland return. Astounding long drive comfort and economy.

Don't forget to upload lots of great music to your hard drive!
I also packed some (get ready for it) bird dropping wipes! Bird poo can leave nasty etching through the clear coat if not removed in a timely fashion.
Happy travels :)
Every single thing in this thread is good advice. Evlkarl is right - that road is great. I did that one about 20 years ago and saw all kinds of reeeeally cool cars blasting it.

Having done a few military moves in my day I've spanned one end of North America to the other and top to bottom... and a few chunks in between.

Most importantly (since you're moving): Don't overload your car. You may be tempted to pack a lot of stuff in there (I always have been). Watch the weight. I nearly ruined a set of springs on a car once. And I see a lot of overloaded little cars on the road, sagging in the back, and I know their little front wheels are just skimming the road.

Every vehicle I've ever owned always travels with a kit containing the following items minimum:

- A light of some sort... currently, I have a 3 LED light that actually clips to the brim of my hat, so it's hands free
- Utility knife
- Four hose clamps (pocket change)
- Fuse kit with tester (about $5 at any WalMart)
- One roll of electrical tape (under a dollar)
- Battery kit (terminal cleaner, terminal protectant spray, felt pads and at least one new cable attachment)
[All the above fits in a little bag that used to be a men's shaving kit]
- One roll of Gorilla Tape (couple bucks)
- Ratchet and a basic set of sockets, universal pliars, one phillips and one standard screwdriver
- Some plastic sheeting (I use a mattress cover for moving... bought it at the UHaul store for 2 bucks, I think) in case of broken window or leaks or heavy rain and you don't have a rain poncho or ground cover or...
- Automotive fire extinguisher
- Jumper cables or battery starter unit
- First aid kit with the basics
- Spare quart of oil
- Mechanix gloves

At one time or another, I've used every single one of those items over the years except the fire extinguisher, either on my car or other folks' cars broken down somewhere. All of it takes up almost no room and, in a pinch, you can sufficiently fix a number of common issues to get you from the middle of nowhere to... somewhere.

I tend to carry a few other items just from experience (water, bungee cords and such), but this is my basic kit that's all set to go into my Mini when it gets here. I didn't get the First Aid kit in the picture, but it's about the same size as the bag with the fuses/hose clamps/etc. As you can see, it doesn't take up much space at all.

Thanks for all the replies so far. They all sound great! I was thinking of doing some sort of video, probably a dashboard time lapse. If I do, I'll definitely post a link.

I'll remember not to overload. I think I'll be taking a few musical instruments in the car, but they should be light enough.
