Now have an auto JCW hatch. It has the digital dash, is there a setting so that the gear the car is in is displayed rather than just D?

When you put the gearbox in Sport mode (push to the left) it'll show. Either S + gear (auto mode) or M + gear (manual mode). Otherwise, D

Thank you, shame particularly as other manufacturers do it

If you pull one of the paddles when the gearbox is in normal mode, it will show you the current gear. It will also allow temporary manual changing for something like 20 seconds, before automatically switching back to auto.
