For the guide, skip straight here: Retrofit Genuine BMW/Mini towbar, reversing camera, and...

#ORIGINAL POST BELOW

I've recently installed an official BMW/Mini towbar retrofit kit, parking sensor rear retrofit kit, and the reversing camera.

After the install I got the following 2 errors, but wasn't worried because I hadn't coded them in yet.

Motor vehicle Vehicle Speedometer Auto part Car
Motor vehicle Vehicle Gauge Car Auto part
Motor vehicle Gauge Auto part Vehicle Speedometer

I have downloaded esys 3.27.1 and launcher pro 2.8.2 from here: Fxx-/Ixx-/Gxx-series - Coding: (No Request) Latest...

I attempted adding in the relevant codes to the FA (VO) last night.

235 - Trailer tow hitch with removable ball head
3AR - Rear-mounted rack preparation
3AG - Rear view camera
507 - Park distance control (PDC), rear

Since doing that, I am still getting the above errors. The only change is that I now get a screen pop up when I put it into reverse, which is I presume, for the camera - bit there is no image.

Motor vehicle Auto part Speedometer Gauge Vehicle

This is what is now showing in Bimmercode.

Any suggestions?

I've also got a thread going here: Fxx-/Ixx-/Gxx-series - Coding: (No Request) Latest...

Do you see the camera ecu in the svt (ecu tree)? Did you insert cafd in the camera ecu?
You should see the camera ecu if not you didint retrofit the camera right. Camera also needs can3

Camera is on CAN3 (R3*1B).

I just added the codes to FA and then coded all the ECUs...

I'll have to take another look at the tree tonight, but I'm new to coding...

Surprisingly easy.

Well, according to the BMW instructions, each (towbar, rear pdc, camera) is a 3 hour job. But they share the same tear down, with an extra couple of bits for the camera.

Took us 12 hours in the end ;) but there was much faffing and tea breaks.

Hardest bit was getting the rear bumper off.

I'll try and put a write up together once I've got everything working.

Ok, we're getting there.

Follow the thread linked above for all the details...

ECUs: AAG (towbar), ICAM2 (camera), and PMA2 (PDC) have appeared in the FA

I couldn't inject the CAFD in E-sys 3.27.1, the button was greyed out. Seems my psdzdata was too new.

Installing E-sys 3.33.4 solved that.

I have yet to test the towbar electrics, but the error has disappeared.

The rear camera works.

But I'm still getting a PDC error when I put it in reverse.

Strange one...

I'm getting an error saying camera failed, but still getting the image on the display (but minutes the lines, even though they're activated)

At first I thought maybe it was the wrong CAFD, but then I realised that of that was the case, it shouldn't have worked at all.

Could it be because I punched the canbus cables when bringing them through the body?

Maybe I should cut and repair them?

Thoughts?

I was getting camera failed because the lines going into the headunit were broken at the quadlock. But i also had no visual. Check if the ecu is visible when you get the error. If not then its the can3 line causing a disconnection. Since you have visual i dont think its the cables going into the headunit

Thank you.

I've also been advised to calibrate the camera through ISTA...

I'll try that first, and investigate the cable second.

Where it was pinched I could see bare wire, but at the time it wasn't broken, so I just patched with electrical tape.

CmdrBond....

I'm curious which instructions you used to retrofit the PDC?
Because the ones I have, even though they look like they are from Mini appear to be wrong, notably they reference R3, which implies CAN3, but should actually be on CAN2. Though if you follow the wire positions you will actually end up on CAN2.

Note: Not to confuse the PDC controller with the reverse camera, which IS on CAN3.

Thanks!

The instructions I used were provided by BMW with the retrofit kit.

The PDC connect to R2, the reversing camera connects to R3.

I'm trying to put a guide together at the moment.

Right, I promised a guide. With NewTIS getting pulled, I cannot get the full-size images anymore, but luckily I had already made my own MS Word document as I find it easier to work from paper than screens when following instructions.

NOTE: These instructions are specific to the F54 Clubman I cannot take any responsibility if they do not work for other models. ALSO: I believe only the F54 Clubman and F60 Countryman can be fitted with a towbar.

FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS AT YOUR OWN RISK - I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL. IF YOU ARE UNSURE, GET PROFESSIONAL HELP. I CANNOT AND WILL NOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR DAMAGE TO YOU, YOUR VEHICLE, OR OTHERS AND/OR THEIR VEHICLES. EITHER DIRECTLY DURING THE INSTALLATION PROCESS OR DUE TO FAILURE OF A PART AFTER THE INSTALLATION PROCESS

Rather than copy out all the documentation, I will instead attach the PDFs.

Special mention goes out to Bill Taylor, who posted the following in Retrofitting OEM backup camera coding issues

Hopefully we can offer some help, at the very least minimise surprises!

I have attached the BMW fitting instructions which claimed to be for F45/F46 (translated from the original German version I found online). Whilst obviously the details will be different for F48/F55/F56, electrically they are identical. ...[SNIP]
It is his PDF I have attached for the Rear Camera.

I will also list the part numbers I used, and where I have them, I will list the parts that have been superseded or the parts that supersede the part number I used.

I bought some parts direct from BMW, and some from eBay, I will also list what I paid. It is possible you can get more of the parts from eBay than I did, and therefore have a cheaper install. All prices are in Great British Pounds Sterling (GBP) and include VAT if charged. Prices are subject to change and are beyond my control, they are given purely for evaluation purposes only.

Once install I added the codes for each to the FA(VO), injected the CAFD, and then coded.

To obtain Esys, have a look here: Bimmerfest.com > BMW Coding and Programming

With regards to the coding instructions attached, where it says click on "Read SVT", click on "Read ECU" instead.

I am still getting a camera failure error, but everything is working fine. I believe this is down to the hole I butchered in the rear bumper and, as a result, the camera is slightly twisted.

Right - parts... I ordered some parts direct through my local BMW dealership. I would have ordered through shop.mini.co.uk - Retrofitting & Conversion accessories, but some parts were either superseded or out of stock, and it wouldn't let me.

031095 RETROFIT KIT,TRAILER TOW HITCH,REMOVABLE

Supersedes: 71 60 6 889 590, 71 60 6 884 356, 71 60 6 879 427, 71 60 6 874 849, 71 60 6 872 320, 71 60 6 870 518, 71 60 6 867 932

Parts you MIGHT need:

61 13 6 814 611 - Bus interface 10x
£15.90 direct from BMW - ONLY required if CAN-BUS resistor R2 not present
Supersedes: 61 13 9 266 838

71 60 6 872 066 - Holder
£8.90 direct from BMW - Claims not included with the kit, but WAS included in my kit.

61 14 9 270 357 - Fuse carrier
£15.96 direct from BMW - Not mentioned on shop.mini.co.uk, only mentioned in instructions

Hexagon nut with washer - The size of this is not specified, which is strange, but I didn't have a mounting bolt for it to go on anyway. Instead, I used an expanding hollow wall fixing to mount the holder using an existing hole in the inner bodywork.

Additionally, you may need 20 Amp standard blade fuses x3 and 5 Amp mini blade fuses x6. Instructions say not supplied yet, IIRC, they were supplied (although I have plenty spare anyway).

Total cost to me: £877.66 - and YES, aftermarket ones are cheaper, don't need coding, and might even have all 13 pins connected instead of the 9 in the Genuine BMW Mini towbar! As a factory option, this was £655 if fitted when ordering new. They also wanted £500 odd in labour to fit! Claiming the labour was a half-price offer. Considering I have heard of people being priced in excess of £2,000 for BMW to retrofit this, that half-price offer seems credible!

£15.90 direct from BMW - ONLY required if CAN-BUS resistor R2 not present
Supersedes: 61 13 9 266 838

Total cost: £316.59 to me: As a factory option, this was £320 if fitted when ordering new.

REAR VIEW CAMERA - there is no genuine retrofit kit for this for Mini.

Parts you WILL need

61 11 9 390 807 - Rep.cable rearview camera
£91.99 from eBay - around £87 from BMW direct

66 53 9 475 687 - Reversing camera
~£370 direct from BMW
Supersedes: 66 53 9 475 688, 66 53 9 472 922, 66 53 9 472 923, 66 53 9 109 856, 66 53 7 951 084, 66 53 6 997 903, 66 53 9 869 525, 66 53 6 821 230, 66 53 9 396 832, 66 53 9 390 542, (66 53 9 365 048), 66 53 9 353 705, 66 53 9 324 247, 66 53 9 339 199

* 66 53 9 365 048 is listed separately with no supersedes or superseded.

51 12 7 370 614 - Mount for backup camera
~£18.50 from BMW direct

51 24 7 345 709 - Cover for rearview camera
~£17.25 from BMW direct

I got lucky and got the camera, cover, and mount combined from eBay for £53.48.

Parts you MIGHT need:

61 13 6 814 611 - Bus interface 10x
£15.90 direct from BMW - ONLY required if CAN-BUS resistor R3 not present
Supersedes: 61 13 9 266 838

Total cost to me: £153.47. As a factory option, this was £310 if fitted when ordering new.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you do not have R3 present and are only fitting the reversing camera, you may have to make your own wiring harness to mount R3 as it doesn't seem to exist as a part. I do not have the part numbers for the plug, I could probably find them if I looked hard enough, but I have finished my holiday and am back to work so I don't really have the time. Sorry.

Instructions are attached

Couple of updates, in this thread over at Bimmerfest.com > The Best of Bimmerfest! > Coding and Programming > Adding 235, 3AG, 3AR, and 507 to F54 Mini Clubman, jjan explains injecting cafd for the relevant ECUs, read the following posts above Esys versions too...

To injection cafd files connect to your car, read FA, activate FA, read ECU, search for the retrofitted ecu, click on the ecu, then on the right side of the screen you can see the button ‘detect cafd for ....’ (can’t remember the exact last word), click on that button, it should give you a lift of cafd files. Choice one, best is closest to you Ilevel, but all should work, click ok. Now go back to the ecu in the tree and with right click choose code.

Do this for all retrofitted ecu.

After your done, on the bottom you can click on reset svt and than read ecu again. All retrofitted ecu should have a cafd file showing in green.

Furthermore you should Code other ecu which affect the retrofit but you wrote that you already did that.

Good luck

Additionally, for installing the parking sensors, I needed to cut 2 holes in the bumper.

You can use drills and hole saws, but there's a risk of damaging the paintwork. The best way is to use a screw punch.

I believe the correct size is 18mm, although I could be wrong on that.

I couldn't get a cheap 18mm punch, so I got the following 18.6mm one instead. It did the job perfectly as far as my untrained eye can tell.

Lastly, I'm going to edit the title of this thread to make it easier for others to find when searching for these instructions.

After the discussion had in this thread with regards to KCAN 3, I would like to warn anyone attempting the camera retrofit to check if CAN3 is active first.

I've installed 2 retrofit kits that both came with a retrofit canbus terminating resistor for KCAN 2. This suggests that whatever your build, KCAN 2 should be active.

The retrofit document from BMW is for a 2 Series. This contains a retrofit canbus terminating resistor for KCAN 3.

The fact that this kit is not available to Minis, and the discussions in the thread linked to, suggests that not all BDCs will be KCAN3 ready.

There are to my knowledge only 4 systems that use KCAN3...
  1. The reversing camera
  2. LED headlights
  3. Longitudinal torque distribution (All4 only)
  4. Active sound design (Electric/Hybrid only)
So unless you have an All4, electric/hybrid vehicle, or LED headlights, you might have issues getting the camera to work.

It has been suggested elsewhere that up to a certain point, BDCs were available in low, medium, and high (and after that they're bespoke). I cannot confirm this, but it could add weight to the reason the guy trying to add LED headlights is having issues.

Yea definitely. I will test the bdc for kcan3 on my wifes f56 one with the camera retrofit. If it works im lucky. Else i might retrofit a virgin new bdc...because i really want to fit led headlights

Thanks for this thread! I'm going to retrofit the reversing camera on a 2018 Cooper Clubman today. It has all the right options: LED headlights, JCW bumpers, rear PDC, big screen nav, so it should all be straightforward. :D

Famous last words, lol.

Good luck.

You will need to cut a hole for the camera mount.

I don't know if it's because mine is slightly miscut, or it's where I pinched the cables (still haven't gotten round to sorting that out). But I keep getting an error, and occasionally the marker lines don't show.

But I always get the image, and that's the main thing.

Done :D Took about 6-7 hours to finish

I couldn’t find the recalibration in ISTA unfortunately, but ISTA said everything was working correctly.

Also, I found the part nr for the R3 plug: 61132471242
