Welcome to the forum. I believe you talking about the shift knob/ball itself? The best way to remove it is sit between the seats have the shifter between your legs and start to pull upwards towards your head. I would start slowly to see if you can wackle the shift knob a little and than start pulling on it. The knob is on pretty tight but it will come loose after a while. Just make sure you keep you face away when you pull really hard on it you can a bloody nose really easy. Hope that will help you.
It is just a pull straight upwards but make sure you unclip the gaitor surround ring and unplug the driving mode connector or else you'll rip it all out.
If you're trying the method above, it sounds like it's on tight, so might need more than one tug..... please make sure the neighbours are not watching, could be awkward.
