The F body cars overcharge if you will the battery while it's loosing power. When you replace the battery the car will continue to overcharge the battery resulting in a shortened battery life. When you program/code the car to tell it you have a new battery it resets the IBS so it goes back to the normal rate of charge. You can use Carly or BimmerLink with a bluetooth adapter yourself or have a dealer or capable shop do it for you.
