I have the same, recently developed, movement with my 2014 F56 Cooper with 43000 miles. Local independent (ex Mini) says it's the steering spindle. I decided to buy a new genuine part replacement from eBay as £240 from Mini and am getting it fitted soon.

He did say it was safe but maybe an MOT failure and can only get worse. He also said a common problem but very little on the web.

Possibly a bit OCD but I like my cars to be right.

Issue is with the steering COLUMN.
