Some pics....

Tolerance on 17 inch rims is extremely tight for the JCW Brembo brakes. The brakes look meatier on the 17 inch rim. The first three pics are 17 inch rims. And the last three are 18 inch rims.I hope people find this useful. I went with the first rims shown (Race Spoke 498 in 17inch as they really show of the brembos quite well). The second and third pic are the very similar Track Spoke 501 17 inch rim. The last two pics show the extremely popular cup spoke 18 inch rims (an upgrade from standard). The pic of the three minis are showing the high end 18 inch OEM rims.

Another consideration....POTHOLES...larger rims are much more vulnerable to tire and rim damage.

If your winter road conditions are such that you won't avoid all potholes or you may slide into a curb on the odd occasion then 17 inch rims and suitable tires will last much longer!

The problem with those pics of the multiple cars is those are not F56 Mini's, but the R56. Those wheels look nice on those cars. Plus, I don't believe the Brembo calipers were nearly as large on the previous Gen JCW's.

In my opinion "none" of the available wheels for the F56 JCW are all that pretty. I know this is due to the large (no VERY Large) front Brembo calipers, and I realize there is very little space, thus the curved vanes on the spoke wheels. The clearance is only a few mm at best.

But, unless someone comes up with aftermarket wheel options, such as BBS, we are stuck with the slim wheel options for the F56 JCW.

I'm still not a fan of any of the wheels but the Cup Spoke Wheel, because size matters! I really wanted the 17" track spoke wheels during my initial build, as I said before. But, they aren't that great in person...none of them are since the large calipers has made it impossible to create a wheel with that classic MINI multi-spoke wheel look. The choices for the MCS are far better looking wheels...they just are.

Was this dilemma a reason to not buy a JCW?....absolutely not! I'll live with the wheel issue until a suitable aftermarket race designed wheel is available (if ever). In the meantime I hope the Cups will make me proud. They have grown on me, even though they aren't as "open" as I'd like.

Cheers,

John

John,

I've just emailed BBS about this, see if they do anything with the correct offset, pattern etc. They were really quick getting back to me about rims for the Audi (strange offset and I was worried about load ratings with 500+ hp), so I'm hoping they'll be equally as fast. I'll keep you all posted.

If the Mini Wheel Product Manager only had designed one decent all-black set of 18-inch wheels for us (future) JCW owners!
The wheel options on the old JCW were much better. On the 2015/2016 JCW's we are left with the Cup Spoke Two Tones or the Mini Accessory wheels for the new JCW's, with each of them not really being great! Mini could have done a much better job on the 18-inch wheel options. It was actually one of the reasons why I hesitated so long to finally place the order. I finally decided on the Cup Soke Two Tones, as the 17-inch black wheels look a bit too small on the car for my taste.

Jim,

You are heading down the same path as me...eventually I will try the same thing. I believe the the 215's would be a more "proper look" for a car like the JCW. The 18" Cup Spokes have really grown on me though...they clean easy and look stunning imo. The 17"s are definitely too small for this F56 body style.

All black wheels would be horrendous to keep looking clean imo....I've never had black wheels before and they get dusty by just looking at them! The Cup Spokes are a good compromise from all black to all silver.

Let us know how things go should you opt a switch in tire size. Just so you know 235/35/18's are the exact O.D. (check it out)...probably too wide to fit, but may be worth a try....can always use wheel spacers! :)

My reasoning is not for aesthetic reasons, I want michelin pilot supersports and they dont do them in 205 :)

Cant wait to ditch the runcraps

I too, really had a tough time with the wheel issue, feeling that the previous gen of JCW had much more interesting/sporty/cool-looking choices. Like several on this thread, in the end I opted for the 18" Cup Spokes for now, hoping that I will grow to like them. The wheel clearance seems awfully high to me and have already started to look into suspension upgrades (the dealer had fitted a very nice looking adjustable Bilstein BSS Kit to their JCW test car, which at least to me felt awesome - stiffer and flatter in the corners but not at all too hard or bouncy on the streets - was several cm lower, so looked very good as well).

The car arrives in a few hours so I too, am worried about how the run-flats will feel (here in Japan, all JCWs come with run-flats as standard). I was glad to hear someone here mention that Michelin Pilot Super Sports are available for 18" JCW as I went through 2 sets of Pilot Super Sports on the car I am trading in for my JCW (a BMW M135) and found them to be among the best performance tires I've ever owned.
