Update: A success story. Wiring harness replaced at Mini UK expense. Service Centre only charged for investigation.
Thanks for all the info on this discussion thread. I believe the range of similar problems and the reported customer experience led to our successful result: all in a matter of days!??
PS the work took a full 3 days.

Wanted to share another success story, I also posted this on mini2.com on a similar thread.

I had the same issue with my 14 plate Mini Cooper S. I have relatively low mileage (just clocked 40k) so maybe it took a bit longer for it to happen! Had stabilization warning and when diagnosed apparently there were also brake fluid warnings. Original diagnosis was an independent, they advised me to read up online and speak to BMW, I had to get it diagnosed at a main dealer as only they can properly apply to BMW for goodwill. Bit of an anxious wait and waiting for a fight (BMW themselves told me it was not guaranteed to be successful, so I may pay main dealer diagnostic charge for nothing at £160!) - but just found out today BMW approved 100% of parts and 80% labour, so looking at max £600 in total to repair. Still not ideal given the nature of the issue but pretty happy with this outcome and they guarantee the work for 2 years as it's contributed for by me. So if anyone else has this issue definitely go down this route, if BMW say no knowing the success stories definitely makes a difference so they can't really treat anyone differently assuming your car has been serviced properly etc (this seemed important!). The dealer also is waiving the £160 diagnostic charge.

Just read through this thread and I ought to ask if there is any way to prevent this from happening? and if bmw/mini addressed this issue already with their later models?

Hey, I was told that BMW changed the part in 2017 so it should only affect F56 from 2014-2017.

Not sure it is possible to prevent it happening as it is caused by screenwash and rain water reacting which just presumably gets worse over time and the wires swell up... I am a little unclear if it's just the tape they used causing that or the wires or both though.

Hi all, Newbie to this particular forum but as my wifes 2015 Cooper S (33k miles) went in the other day for the Vertical Headlight error, I thought I'd share and give you hope. Obviously out of warranty and about a month short of 5 years old. The dealer tried to fix the fault with a new NSF headlight. After it made no difference they called me back sited an ingress of water on part of the loom and a complete new wiring harness was required. Having read several internet threads I guessed it would be this issue. They advised a 14 hour labour job, although they had the part so could start immediately but would have to fit the repair around other cars coming in for regular services etc.....at a cost of £2700! The dealer (Marshalls in Hook, Hants) discussed it with MINI UK and they have agreed to pay 100% parts and Labour. The only cost to me is the £99+VAT diagnostic charge. I get it back Tuesday/Wednesday next week so am hoping for a tight car again.

I asked about preventing the same issue in the future and, as the post above suggests, I was told MINI has re-designed the harness so this shouldn't be repeated. Lets hope so.

Hi All, Also another newbie to this forum. I have been in contact with MINI UK and after a vehicle check this onring, they have got back to me and said we will cover 100% of parts and 70% of labour, leaving me with a £700ish bill. My car is also a 2015 one d however has just shy of 100k miles on the clock with around 10 stamps on the idrive. Can i ask how you got them to cover all the labour?

Hi All - just thought I'd share my recent experience with the same issue.

My 2015 Cooper S (with only 2,300 miles on the clock!) was giving the pedestrian warning system fault and parking light fault messages. The dealership (Coopers in Cobham) informed me that it was due to water ingress and that it would be a 3 or 4 day fix but they would contact BMW to see if they would cover the cost. BMW came back 2 days later and said, as with others, that they would pay for 100% of the parts and 80% of the labour which I agreed to. They kept the car for a week and it cost me £460 (no charge for diagnostics) which, given the mileage, was painful but not as painful at the £3,000 it would have cost without BMW contributing! So all in all I'm a little frustrated at having to stump up the cash but very happy with the way Coopers handled the problem and they've done a great job on the repair - no rattles, damage or misaligned panels.

Just waiting for Coopers to get back to me about whether the repair included any modification and if there is any maintence that I can do to prevent it happeneing again in the future.

Hi all,
Need advice regarding this loom issue.
Car is Mini One 2014, new engine fitted in 2016, smoking/emissions problem 2017, fix created an oil leak!
Now I have the dreaded headlight aim fault which was fixed at a local garage, but they say the loom is swollen and fix may not last long! Head light fix created new problem with indicators flashing rapidly. So, I think this loom needs changing.

Question, is it worth going back to Mini to ask for some good will, or am I doomed as it’s 7 years old with 40k miles. I have had it fully serviced by the supplying dealer since new … in the hope of getting good will due to the engine replacement .. it might need it for the loom now.

What are my chances?

Update: chances were very good. Mini agreed to pay 100% of parts and labour. Amazing result and my faith in dealers has been restored. Yes, I know I shouldn’t be needing a new wiring loom, but they made it so easy to get the goodwill, I can help but thank them enough. Barretts Mini in Ashford.. TOP TEAM and they will get my business in the future 👍👍👍

Resurrecting this thread. I've currently got this problem with my 2015 3 door JCW and wish I'd found this thread sooner.

I initially took the car to my local MINI specialist, as my car is around 10 months out of warranty (I had the 5 year extended warranty) and I assumed the issues I was having were relatively minor and down to a dodgy sensor or a loose connection. £350 later the specialist told me they'd found evidence of swollen wiring and the car would require a portion of the wiring loom replacing. They told me where maintaining an ongoing warranty isn't an issue, BMW supply a part that allows them to partially replace the loom without having to do the whole thing. However, it still requires a huge amount of the interior out and is still major work.

I asked them to hold off on doing the work and spent much of last week pursuing the issue with my dealership. They told me as the car is over 5 years old and out of warranty and the issue isn't common (which I now know was a total lie) that my car wouldn't be eligible for goodwill and to contact MINI UK directly myself.
I contacted MINI UK and offered to pay to have the car re-assembled at my local garage and driven to the dealership, with the understanding that they'd carry out the work on the wiring loom. This would be at a cost of roughly £500 to me due to the amount of investigation done at the previous garage to discover the fault and I thought I was being pretty reasonable by offering to cover this.

However, MINI UK told me that they weren't prepared to do any work on the car without running their own diagnostics and ONLY if they decided the fault was a manufacturing defect would they consider a goodwill gesture. They wouldn't divulge how much of the repair bill would be covered by any goodwill and they refused to take the car based on the diagnostics already run at my local garage, despite me sending a report and photo evidence. I told them I'd be happy for them to confirm with their own diagnostics as it's understandable they may want to do this, but that if the fault was confirmed to be the same as the one identified by my garage that I'd like some assurances that they'd cover the costs, especially as at this point they quoted me an estimate of £2548.60 + VAT for the repair.

I told them I couldn't be expected to pay £500 to my existing garage, only to drive it over there and discover that A) they either they won't cover any part of the repair under goodwill or B) they will cover only a small portion of the repair bill, leaving me worse off than having my existing garage cover the repair work. I explained again that the fault is common and BMW have themselves created a part to repair it as it's so well known, and that I'd be more than happy to bring the car to the dealership and shoulder the costs from the MINI specialist as long as they'd give me some kind of guarantee that they'd cover some or all of the work.

At this point, they told me they had escalated my complaint but the final decision was that they were no longer prepared to offer any goodwill whatsoever and to let them know if they could help me in the future but that this discussion was no longer to be continued and they wouldn't change their decision.

Having been without the car for two weeks and assuming that I wasn't going to get the dealership to commit to the repairs based on their correspondence, I've now instructed my MINI specialist to carry out the work for me, but they've advised me the repair is already running into day 2 of labour and while they're doing everything they can to keep the costs down, it's extremely labour intensive work. The bill looks like it'll easily exceed £2000 at this point.

Reading this thread, I'm now kicking myself that I didn't take the risk and have the car reassembled and taken to the dealership, however both the dealership and MINI UK made it quite clear that they weren't going to take any financial responsibility. If I'd found this thread sooner I'd have taken the car down there anyway and kicked up a huge fuss but based on everything both the dealer and MINI UK had told me, they weren't prepared to cover any costs associated with the repair.

I'm now faced with a massive bill from my garage, although they're very sympathetic to the situation and are providing me with photo evidence of the damage, the repair and have offered to give me the damaged section of wiring to use as evidence once it's been extracted. They've also agreed to put together a report detailing the fault, diagnostics and the repair along with the bill so that I can continue trying to pursue the dealership for my costs.

Following all of this, I emailed Peter Vardy customer complaints and outlined everything that had happened so far between myself, the dealership, MINI UK and the third party garage and I told them that at this stage I now consider the dealership in breach of contract under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and will be pursuing the third party costs for the repair. I've given them one more opportunity to settle the cost and told them if we can't reach an agreement, then I'll be escalating to ADR and if necessary I'll take them to the small claims court to get my money back.

I've fought as hard as I possibly can and I'm really disappointed that it's come to this. Not only that but I'm concerned about what state my car will be in once it's reassembled. I trust the garage who have the car (they have a 6 week waiting list as they're that popular with MINI and BMW owners) so I'm hopeful that, if anything, they'll do a better job than the dealership monkeys would, but I still worry that it'll never be the same.

Reading everyone's success stories gives me some hope, but as the repair is now being done by a third party I'm not sure how successful I'll be in pursuing them for the costs. I have a paper trail to prove that they refused to offer any goodwill, forcing me to have it repaired elsewhere and I can only hope this is enough.

Sorry for the huge essay, I'll update once I know more but please keep everything crossed for me :(

With a bill this massive, I'm going to be forced to sell the car once the repair is complete if I can't get the money back, as I'm 6 months pregnant right now and just don't have the money for this kind of repair at the moment :(

Hi all. Just having the exact same problem with our late 2015 mini cooper S, bought from Stephen James, Ruxley.
We have been a tyre pressure warning for years, which we took back to mini several times.
Then we had the windscreen wipers either going extremely slow, or very fast. Mini failed to find the problem, but that stopped eventually.
Late last year the steering wheel had to be changed, as the horn wouldn't work.
Recently we have has the pedestrian protection fault warning, followed 2 weeks later by a lighting system warning, then a headlight vertical control warning.
The headlights then turned on in the middle of the night, and started flashing independently. Finally the remote key failed to work, and the car wouldn't lock.
I am now thinking that this is all linked to the wiring loom fault.
We have had an independent diagnostic, and its the faulty wiring loom, where the washer fluid which runs through the wiring loom, has leaked, swelling and rotting the protective wire casings and destroying the wires.
Its now with our local mini dealership, and awaiting their diagnostic check.
The car has a full service history with mini, and has only done 41000 miles.
I find it ridiculous, that this is a fault, acknowledged, by mini, but not rectified or checked while servicing the cars liable to this problem.
I will keep you all up to date with the dealership, and mini uks response to this.

So mini Uk have offered 100% parts, and 70% labour. To be honest, for a car that has been fully serviced by mini, and had ongoing issues with warning lights while under warranty, I think that paying nearly £1000 is a bit of a slap in the face, when I’ve been quoted £1600 by a mini specialist garage, for everything.

Hey all, another victim of the water damaged wireing loom here. I have had this diagnosed with the local dealer and they/we have twice tried and been denied goodwill by Mini UK. £3500 quoted for repair/new loom. Any advice on how to get somewhere with MIini UK would be appreciated, the threat of small claims etc or is it just a waste of time. Really poor situtation to be in, 2015 JCW with only 25k on the clock.

Hi. I called mini uk direct, to try and improve the offer but no success. Might be worth a call to them, and explain everything. If it’s been fully mini dealer serviced, you should definitely get something. At the end of the day, it’s a design fault that should have been recalled when spotted.

I’ve just had the plastic removed from the wiring whilst it was in for an MOT with my local indy BMW/Mini specialist. It sounds like this is something they do regularly as a precaution as they’ve seen plenty of cars requiring a new wiring harness. I’m so glad it’s done. Ever since I heard about this problem last year I’ve not used my windscreen washers at all!

Do you know if they took the plastic tape from just the part you can see when the bonnet is open or did they have to remove anything to take off all of the plastic tape? I haven’t used my windscreen washers for ages too but there are a few posts saying that their wiring loom was damaged from leaking oil. Not sure how though.

Just the section under the bonnet nearest the windscreen. They probably only had to remove the plastic trim from around the windscreen wipers.
